Will the output be High Def?

I have the following tv;

I am currently using it as my monitor. Not sure what the connection type is, just took the lead out the back of the montor and plugged it into the tv. Think its VGA though.

What I would like to know is, if I download High def video clips onto my pc, and watch them on the tv, will they play in high def? Is there any media player available for the pc which will allow me to do this, possibly one with upscalling abilities?

If not, what would you recommend as the best media player for my setup to provide the best output?

Your TV has will support 720p and no more, so any high def clips/TV you watch on it will not go above that. Any 1080i or 1080p video will be scaled down to 720 by your monitor. Any media player should be able to play your high def clips, depending on what they are made with. Possible examples would include, but not be limited to, Windows Media Player, PowerDVD and WinDVD. You can watch high def through a VGA cable, although DVI or HDMI would provide a better quality picture.

I have no recommendation as to the "best" player. You'll need to decide that one for yourself.

VGA should work fine, just figure out if your display card supports 16:9 output (e.g. WXGA at 1360x768 or 1366x768) to match your computer desktop to the native resolution of the monitor. Some think computer text is too small at 1366x768 so you need to decide if you like a large text desktop or if you like high definition video. If you are limiting yourself to 1024x768, the player will downscale 720p.

Try playing windows media wmv-HD 720p samples to see what is possible for HDTV. Download samples at http://www.wmvhd.com/

Typical HD MPeg2_TS files won't look quite this good, but close. Try VLC as a player to get close to the raw playback and see the results of different deinterlace settings for 576i, 1080i material. PowerDVD is more automatic.
