    I have loads of movies in divx format and not avi is it possible to add permanent subtitles directly to the divx file without having to convert it to avi?

    Divx is AVI, check the stickies at the top of this forum about adding subs.

    Not necessarily. They may actually be DivX "new" divx format. If so, other options are available.
    If so, see DivXMediaBuilder and/or DivXMux GUI
