I'm fairly new to this area but I was wondering if there's a good, preferably open source library or tool that I can use to figure out what the file type and codec of a given file? Ideally, I'd love to know that a file is an mov with MPEG-3 even if the file isn't named with an 'mov' extension. I've been doing some research on such a tool and the closest I've come across to what I want is FFmpeg but it doesn't reliably figure out files such as SWF.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Justin

Not sure that either GSpot or AVICodec offer a library.

The original request was for a library (.dll/.lib/.so/.a), not an application, although they did say or tool.

I would assume that they want to incorporate it into an app. Like how the next version of AVICodec will use mediainfo.

Also mediainfo is GPL or LGPL (useful if you are creating a commercial app). Not sure about AVICodec, but GSpot isn't opensource.
