Hi Guys,
I had a LG burner, no problems with burning (2 speed)
I bought a 16 Lite-on burner. Disks won't play in my DVD players (3 different).
I check with nereo DVD/CD dpees prog. It says the disks are closed. But when i look on the surface of the disk it looks like its not finalized.
I tried other media (different brands). Still no luck.
Reinstalled Windows XP (1st I formated the HD).
No luck again.
i returned the burner and bought a NEC AD-5170A.
But also with this burner the same problem.
Even with DVD decrypter or Alcohol.
Can anyone tell me what is going wrong?
PLEASE HELP!

There is no way you can tell if a disc has been finalized by looking at the surface...unless of course you are Superman...
I have two LG burners and wouldn't trade them for anything(except maybe a Pioneer but I would still have one LG for my odd burning needs).
I never burn at the highest rated speed of my burners or the media and 95% of my burns are done with DVDDecrypter or Prassi Ones. I use Taiyo Yuden media(voted as the best by many) and Ridata/Ritek 8x media(voted as crap by many) with absolutely no problems at all.
I'd try quality -R media first(like Taiyo Yuden) or look into "bitsetting" a +R disc....and of course slow down the burns. -
of course u can see if there is a lead out...
the color of the surface changes then.
Well, it does on al the dvd's i burned so far (about 1000)
U see a colour change where the file stops on the dvd.
Now Nero doesn't say in it's log file: writing Lead Out. Normally it has to say that if i'm correct...
however. i tried different types of media. (philips, sony, verbatim, platinum, that's wright) al with the same result. i tried +r and -R.
i'm sure it's not the media.
But it can't be the burner because i already tried another one.
Isn't there a file in windows i'm missing or something?
it's killing me,
I miss my LG burner.... -
hech is correct. What you are seeing in the dye layer is the end of the burn - not if it's finalized, very visible unless you burn to the edge. Of the media you listed as being used: I'd recommend Verbatim above any of the others, period. I've had bad Sony discs, I've never bought Philips or Riteks, and have never heard of Platinums. You may want to check the media compatibility list on this forum.
Also: Just for laughs: Burn with something other than NERO. I own NERO, but only use it for data discs and non-standard image burns (non .iso .cue .bin). For DVD Video, I either use DVDRebuilder or DVDShrink to open the DVD files (depending on the size of the folder - Under 90%, Shrink) and always output to an iso file (for later burning if needed) and always burn with DVD Decryptor. I haven't switched to IMGBURN, but many here think highly of it - definitely worth a look. If you look around the forum, you'll find that many have had problems with NERO in the past.
While on the subject of NERO: Have you updated it? If not, maybe you should. If you did just before having burn issues: Uninstall it, then reinstall just up to the prior update.
Check your burn speed: If it's 16X, SLOW DOWN; if it's 2X, SPEED UP. On newer media, I've gotten better quality at 8X on Taiyo Yuden media than 4X (per Nero CD/DVD Speed). Make certain you install the latest firmware for your drive. NEC will have it on their website. Firmware can make all the difference in the world - I know, I've struggled with a drive having bad firmware before (Plextor PX712A). Close any memory hog programs, turn off or disconnect from the internet, and enjoy the burn - or leave the room as I do.;/ l ,[____], Its a Jeep thing,

First of all, i use DVD decrypter to burn....
never had a bad DVD with it.
2nd, there are no updates yet for my burner.
3d I try to understand why different burners are giving the same error....
4th. Why can't i see the ending of the disc now? that's the problem i guess...
5th i can't believe that al the media i tried is bad.
6th I already tried reinstalling my complete system.... so also the latest nero version.
i just want to throw my pc at the garbage....
it's realy frustrating,
i've got this problem for a few weeks now and can't burn movies to watch on my home cinema anymore... -
ow sorry,
i forgot to say that i'm always burn on 8 speed. not faster. -

See if your local MediaMarkt sells Panasonic -R's that say Made In Japan...
I've bought at least 4 of the 25 pack cakeboxes and ALL have been Taiyo Yuden.
Are the jumpers on the newer drive the same as the LG?
Is it stuck in PIO mode?
I was burning coasters for a few days and found out it was
Skype in my start-up programs. Removed it from start-up
and all is well.
Although I would LOVE to reload Windows and start fresh I would
never consider doing that for a simple burning problem...in my opinion.
That is a bit drastic. -
if it was a simple problem it would be solved now don't you think?
but i still can't believe dat al the media i tries wasn't good enough...
i burned over 1000 dvd's now and had 2 misstakes till now.
i also tried fuji-r and +r. both the some problem
als tried cd's (mmore and maxell)
still the some problem.
What is PIO???
what can you do different with the jumpers? that's only for master/slave/ cable select or not?
so if the writer starts up in bios then the jumpers have nothing to do with it? or am i wrong?
becuase no one can find the problem my guess was that it was a misstake in windows. that's why i re-installed.
but even on a clean windows, so only dvd decrypter... so it can't be a conflicting program...
i'm gonna try the panasonic that you mentioned but haven't you got other idea's?
if i test the burn's nero rates them as good quality copy's, and say they are close. but still my dvd players don't want to play them and gives a disk error... -
just in case:
I don't get a error while burning...
it just says its finished
the burner doesn't even try to finalize...
don't i forget a setting somewhere where it says to finalize?
in dvd decrypter: dvd-rom; drive; close >>> track session or disc.
if i select one of those i get a error message from dvd decrypter.
very strange, even on normal cd's -
Nero usually has a choice to finallize in the compilation properties just before you burn - if it is checked, the disc is finalized: No further action on your part.
If you're doing as you say - try 4X or even 2X, then see if the dvd will play on the dvd player.
Hech has some good points.;/ l ,[____], Its a Jeep thing,

Some thoughts -
Do the DVDs play on the PC?
DVD players - old or recent? Older DVD players are less tolerant of variations in the burn.
Media - both NEC and Lite-On drives are pickier as to media brand than LG. -
tying TDK +r now...
seems to be going ok...
first times it writes a lead out,
and i can see on the surfce its been closed...
Now a TDK CD old problem, didn't finalize... -
I really don't see how you can draw a very reliable conclusion from visual inspection of the burned surface. You're going to have to give us some help inorder for anyone to help solve your problem. We need to get answers to the questions oldandinthe way asked. I also would be interested in a CD-DVD Speed disc info display of one of these failed burns. You can download from this link if needed:

Here's a sample of what I'm looking for:

no problem,
when i'm home tonight i wil post one...
It seems that the TDK dvd+r are doing there job, but the speed sucks...
Tonight (dutch time) i will post them... -
