I am capturing full ota hdtv transport streams which I can convert to standard dvd. But I need a way to convert to full resolution xvid in mpeg 4 wrapper.

Currently after capture I use mpeg2repair on the transport streams as they always have errors then use hdtvtompeg2 to convert to dvd compliment mpeg2 then use ulead 9 se to make dvd. If files are to large I use dvd re builder pro to fit to standard single side dvd.

Due to space limitations I need to convert to a format like xvid for full hdtv resolution of material which justifies being in hi definition. I can use the dvi out and spdif out to my home theater system for playback.

So how can I go from a hd transport stream to a hd mpeg4 wraped xvid hopefully using oss free software.

mpeg4 wrapper? do you mean a mp4? then you can use yamb to make a mp4 from the xvid avi.

Thank you, I see your pointer directs me to a "how to" so I will try to see if I can figure it out.

Correct me if I am wrong. The avi is the video file and mp4 is the wrapper. However, how do I get xvid to recognize the transport file which has an exponent of .tp. The article talks of .ts files. I am not lazy. I have done considerable research but I am buried in info and confused. Sort of like if you walked onto an inpatient psychiatric unit, were handed a dsm 4 to read and told to start diagnosing and treating patients.

  4. Hi-

However, how do I get xvid to recognize the transport file which has an exponent of .tp.

DGIndex opens transport streams. Make a D2V project file and an AviSynth script file (an .avs) for frameserving into VDubMod. Then set up for XviD encoding. This is all explained in detail in the docs included with the DGMPGDec package, particularly the QuickStart Guide:

    http://neuron2.net/dgmpgdec/QuickStart.html

The Doom9 Capture Guide also has a ton of useful information:

    http://www.doom9.org/capture/start.html

No offense, but that guide to which Baldrick pointed, while useful for teaching the basics I suppose, is using old and obsolete apps.
