Canon MV830i dropping frames with winDV

Having the above problem when using winDV to capture a 40min miniDV tape with winDV. Using XP Pro SP2 (patch applied for firewire speed problems. Using winDV 1.2.3. Max AVI size configured to 1000000 and discontinuity threshold to 0. Have an Athlon 64 3500 with 1gb Ram and 2x160gb HDD's, so PC should not be a problem.

WinDV hung up after 30mins with 44 dropped frames. Had to cancel to stop it. Video captured so far played OK but what about the rest, and the dropped frames. Set to type 2 AVI. Anyone got any ideas?

Just some random ideas/things to try (I've been using WinDV with my Canon ZR80 without too many issues):

- Make sure you're transferring via Firewire;
- Make sure you have enough HD space (~13GB/hour of DV);
- There's a bug with the WinDV camera controls, so start playback on the camera FIRST, then press the "Capture" button on WinDV;
- Try Type-1 AVI; I've had audio & other issues with Type-2.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

What Jim44 said. And you might try Windows Movie Maker. Sometimes it works better for transfers, don't know why. I use WinDV with no problems.

Is your FireWire input on the motherboard? Sometimes a PCI FireWire card works better. If it's a PCI card, some motherboard chipsets seem to have problems with some FireWire cards.

The machine you describe in "computer details" should work fine. These are usually laptop problems.

Shut down background processes and make sure you are capturing to the second drive, not the OS drive.
