I am coming from an HD Source (over the air network TV), and my destination is DVD.
The source: DirecTV HD Tivo 10-250 (has component, s-video, and composite)
My DA Converter: Canopus ADVC-100 Analog Digital Firewire box
Software: FCP 4.x and DVDSP 3.x

My question is this.... how do i "play" the show on the DirecTV box into my DA box (thru s-video) and maintain 16x9 and what settings do i use in FCP when capturing to retain these settings... so that i can save my show in the aspect ratio intended.

I have done this many time with my Standard Def box with 4x3 material.

I realize this is using the analog approach and I'm fine with that.

    Thanx in advance.

The high definition material will first have to be downconverted to 480i before the Canopus will recognize it. My Motorola DVR from Comcast does downconversion in the box but it unfortunately letterboxes high definition material and outputs 4:3 letterbox. To overcome this, I route the high definition material through a JVC D-VHS machine, which downconverts but does not letterbox. From there, the signal goes into the Canopus, and out to Final Cut Pro (or most times, iMovie HD). In FCP there is a setting for DV Widescreen (select that).

well its going thru s-video - so its downconverted to 480. i guess my question is if the material is NOT letterboxed and actually anamorphic, will the canopus ad converter PRESERVE the anamorphic?

Anamorphic is a flag; the Canopus will ignore the flag being sent down your S-Video feed. However, you can always re-set the flag in your DVD authoring program.

If you want to work with the video and view it in its proper aspect during editing, just make sure you import into Final Cut using the DV Anamorphic sequence present/capture preset, or the DV Widescreen dropdown in iMovie HD.
