I seem to have difficulty making DVDs for the player in the Subject line. I just copied a DVD with Nero 6, a lecture professionally produced, that now plays on my PC DVD without any problems. Put it in the Sony, and it says dirty DVD with some # (track?). I've used DVD Arch 3.0 to create DVDs that I've played on the Sony. Not so good either. Comments?

Try using ImgBurn to create an ISO IMAGE FILE then use ImgBurn to burn that ISO IMAGE FILE to a DVD-R disc.

If using DVD+R then make sure to use bitsetting in order to make it a DVD-ROM instead of a DVD+R

Use only the highest quality media i.e., Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

    Thanks for the info.

I just copied 3 DVDs and all would not play on the Sony. I wonder if re-recording them with the settings you suggested would correct them? I'm satisified that I can at least play them on my PC, but I may want to play one on a DVD player some day.

Take one of these DVD Video discs and copy it back to the computer. You can use DVD Decrypter in FILE MODE and SELECT ALL FILES and this will "RIP" the DVD to your computer.

You should now have a VIDEO_TS folder on your HDD.

Now try using ImgBurn to create an ISO IMAGE FILE then use ImgBurn to burn that ISO IMAGE FILE to a new DVD disc.

That might be enough to make it work with the Sony DVD player.

BTW are you using DVD-R or DVD+R and what is the brand of DVD Media you are using ... also let us know the Media ID (ImgBurn will tell you this if the DVD is blank ... look for Manufacturer ID ... this is the Media ID or CODE). Also do you understand what I said about bitsetting when using DVD+R discs?

You need to copy a DVD5 ( aka single layer ) holloywood movie, to determine whether this is a content or burn issue ?

DVD player review on this site identifies this Sony player can play both burned DVD-R and DVD+R disc very well.

How did you rip from the original DVD? You should try good rippers like DVDFab Decrypter. Then use FixVTS which can fix small problems with the files to ensure DVD compliance. Then open them with DVDShrink before you burn. DVDShrink is very picky about DVD Compliance. If you cannot open the folder with the DVD video data with DVDShrink, you are doing something wrong. Also did the original DVD work in your player?

Nero 6.0 was used to rip it, and burn it. I use Fuji DVD-Rs. I'm sure I'll be able to handle bit settings, but, if not, I'll ask.

This not presently a high priority item for me. I'll see if I can at least make a new DVD from the copied one in the next few days. Since, I'm using DVD-R it appears bit setting isn't needed, correct?

Oh, the msg I get from the Sony is: C:13:70 Dirty disk. It happens on all three disks. Is the code special?

I have several of the programs mentioned above. If I need more, it takes time to get them down. I do not have broadband, only a 30K baud modem. I live in the mtns of CA. My Congressmen tells me that there's a good chance I'll have DSL in Nov. That's a true statement. I specifically called him months ago, and his aide responded. Now if he gets voted out ...

No need to worry about bitsetting with DVD-R discs. Fuji brand DVD-R discs could be a variety of media ... the only way to tell for sure is to see the MEDIA ID which tells you what it really is as Fuji just buys whatever they can so it's not the same all the time.

The quality of the blank DVD media used can affect compatability but another factor affecting compatability is the way the DVD is burned i.e., the software used so that is why I said to try ImgBurn instead of NERO.

NERO is known to not work that well when it comes to making "compatable" DVD discs.

As for the code your SONY DVD player is giving ... could be that it just can't read the DVD due to "not liking" the way it was burned or the type of media it is etc.

Although it might not hurt to run one of those CD/DVD lens clenar discs through it.

Bought a CD clearner kit from Staples. I would guess it works on a DVD player. Used it and compressed air in a can. Didn't change anything. Still get noise. I'll eventually apply the suggestions above, particularly to "correcting" the burned DVD. I may have my other DVD player in action today, so I'll take notes. It's older than the Sony. A Panasonic.

    How old is this Sony?
There are quite a few older Sony players that won't even play a CD-R....and ex-girlfriend of mine has one such Sony.

Since it is not that old I'd suggest burning ISO images with DVDDecrypter and use good media like Taiyo Yuden.
I've only used DVDDecrypter and Prassi Ones to burn DVD's and I've never had a problem.
