Playing downloaded avi files on dvd player

Hello,
This is my first posting, so please be gentle with me!
I am not sure which forum this question should be on either, so I expect it to be re-located.

I have downloaded files from the internet to play on my Pioneer dv380, after being burnt onto Verbatim 4x DVD-Rw discs. The files I download are avi files, and are Divx or Xvid, which my Pioneer should play. However, only about 50% of the files will play. If the file will play I get MPEG4 displayed on the Pioneer, and if not, DVD is displayed and no tasks can be carried out.
Could some patient person please help to point me in the right direction!

Downloading is a fraight business. You cannot gaurantee the quality of the material you get, nor the consistency. Just because your player says it can play avi encoded with Xvid or Divx does mean it can play all avis encoded with Xvid/Divx. Read the manual and you will find restrictions based on Qpel and GMC and other obscure encoder settings. This may mean you have to re-encode some of these files.

AVIRecomp is designed to re-encode using Xvid in a manner that is pretty much universally playable by certified machines. It might be worth a look. Before you do this however, can you post screen shots from g-spot of some of the troublesome files ?

It takes patient. You will evenetually figured out which sites have xvid/divx files that you can play straight on your Pioneer player.

The rest need to be re-encoded with AVIrecomp, or DVD mpeg2.

I have a Pionner DV-470 DivX and I never had any problems with it

But I made a firmware update from Mtz, they are not official but does a very good job

Never converted a AVI file to DVD since then

You can also try MPEG4Modifier to remove QPEL

Thanks for all your help so far. I think I am in here way above my head, and you are using terms and phrases that mean nothing to me!
Gunslinger, I am unable to post a screenshot of the file on G-spot.
I will download the other programme suggested as see how it goes.
