Recording off Panasonic DMR-ES35v DVD recorder - analogue/digital signal.

I am a newbie to all things tecno, so please spare me a few minutes of your time.

I have recently purchased an LG 42" plasma and hooked it up to a Panasonic DVD/VCR recorder - DMR-ES35v unit. The Plasma has an in-built HD tuner, but the unit is SD only.

I want to run a seperate STB, either SD or HD, but have been told that my DVD recorder can only record analogue signal. What does this mean. Is there a way I can hook up a STB to record the digital shows. Analogue signal is very poor in my area, so recording it will be a pain.

According to Panasonic web site, the specs listed for your DVD recorder model DMR-ES35VS do not contain any inputs for either a HDMI video source or a component (Y, PB, PR) video source. So I am assuming here that your STB have either an HDMI video output or a component (Y, PB, PR) output. If this is the case, then you are better off buying a better DVD recorder.

By the way, this is what Panasonic's specs state about your model DMR-ES35VS:

I looked at the others high end Panasonic DVD recorders, say model DMR-EH55S for $500, and it does have the same problem as your model. The DMR-EH55S model has identical specs for A/V Inputs as listed above.

They may be a switch to convert, say component to S-video, but if I were you, I'd look somewhere else to find a recorder with the appropiate AV inputs. I was looking into buying a DVD recorder myself, and I was thinking about buying the DMR-EH55S, but now I realize that it is not worth the $500.

Most of the new technology will eventually be HDMI. So if I were to buy a DVD recorder, it has to have both HDMI/Component (Y.PB,RB) inputs.

I hope this helps more. I guess you will not have a DVD recording accepting HDMI/components any time soon. This type of AV inputs will be the prefered type of AV inputs on a HD-DVD recorder (when it becomes available) or a Blu-ray recorder (again when it becomes available).
