I bought some of the Taiyo Yuden Blank DVD+R's from blankmedia.ca; I am very pleased with them. It cost me, after S&H, taxes, and the cost of the money order $1.00 per disc. Being on a small income, I am using the disc really sparingly. I noticed on a recent thread entitled "blank media" in the media forumn, where Lord Smurf wrote that Verbatim and Maxell are good quality discs as well.
I noticed that Maxell and Verbatim are quite alot less money and they come with ink jet printable surfaces. These are available at blankmedia.ca: are there any drawbacks for going with these brands that are priced cheaper? I record alot of stuff into my computer, like archiving a Soap Opera for my Mom, so a moderatly priced disc that will hold up well, would be good for such a task. I also hava alot of stuff on Princo, and Ritek disc, would the Maxell and Verbatim disc be a suitable disc to trasfer that data to? Thank you in advance for whatever help, you can be in this matter.

I used Verbatum 8x,(16x, DVD-R, DVD+R) and DL discs without any problems. Maxwell is good too. I use either of the following, dependent on price: Verbatum, Maxwell, TY, and TDK. Never had any problems with them. Fuji Film is good, but not in their class. Media quality is of absolute importance, you cannot skimp here.
I personally stocked up on Taiyo Yuden DVD+R when it was sold under the Sony brand name, back during the 8x days. Most Sony media in stores is now 16x and SONY codes (still good, but not a TY). For that matter, I use SONY codes too, Maxell, and several others. And then I have used MCC/MKM media (Verbatim, Apple, others) since 2001. Burning a MCC DVD+R on another computer as I type this post.
There is life beyond Taiyo Yuden. Plenty of other good discs to choose from.Answers to Common Video Questions:

pepegot1: Thank you very much for the information you have provided me. I saw some Verbatim & Maxell DVD Media at the blankmedia.ca website. It is available at a much better price for me and will probably drop the price, once S&H, taxes and money order cost are factored in, I think it will be between 60 or 70 per disc. Once again thank you for taking the time to respond to this topic.
lordsmurf: Thank you for the information you have provided. I also want to thank you for the great resource your website is. I am assuming that the DVD+R, have and advantage over the DVD-R's when it comes to Verbatim and Maxell as well. I took your advice about the Taiyo Yuden media and got the DVD+R's because they are on an overall basis better than the DVD-R's. Thank you once again, I feel much more confident about Verbatim and Maxell.
Verbatim DVD-R is my choice. The DVD+R is good too. The MCC DVD-R has the best reflectivity of any recordable DVD media.
Either Maxell is fine. I tend to use both.
The TY DVD-R is not as clean and compatible as the YUDEN DVD+R.
Have to take each disc on a case by case basis.Answers to Common Video Questions:

Hmmm, I was on the verge of ordering a big bunch of the former. (Need 8x -Rs for the 520. I can only use +Rs on the computer, and haven't had much call for these.)Originally Posted by lordsmurf
So far from all the above posts i see only one name that makes me vomit .... PRINCO ..... stop using this inferior crap lol .... all of the suggestion look good with quality media available from Verbatim, Maxell, sony. tdk and taiyo yuden of course
lordsmurf: Thank you for your additional advice. I will get the Verbatim DVD-R's. The media code is MMC 03, according to blankmedia.ca.
Seeker47: It is nice to see that you are getting some information of value from this thread. This website is a great place to gather knowledge. Thank you to all who contribute to it, to make it such a nice place to go to on the internet.
psx_pirate: I used to use Princo, and to my knowledge they are still holding up. But I am planning on putting that data to a better quality media. Thank you for the information you have provided.
If I could add my two cents
I personally have found that the Maxells and Memorex have worked amazingly for me.
I have tried both of these disks in every type of dvd player i could get my hands on and have yet to have any problems with playback etc. etc. (even had my friends try them on their X-Box and PS2 with no problems).
I have been ripping DVD's for about 3 years now with all my originals still working so-far... (alot of them are backups of the Kids videos so the originals arnt toast)....
Plus, The nice thing about both of these types of disks, they are almost always on sale at the local Bestbuy and Futureshop (Canada).
