Is there a utility of set of utilities that will let me
    a) capture 1080i raw or nearly raw from camcorder to PC (SONY HDR-HC3) via firewire cable
    b) select frame by frame until I have frame I want
    c) capture frame as jpg or bmp in highest resolution possible?

Don't want to spend half of the camcorder cost just buying software to do this. Is there a set of free tools or low cost tools that would work?

    thanks to you both.

I now have captured MPG2 and used virtual dub to save as avi.

Now wondering how I can extract one frame from either of these videos and save as mpeg or bitmap in highest possible resolution???

    THanks again for help

use virtualdubMOD or some program like VEGAS

dont convert first to avi if you want best quality (unless lossless format)

ussually you would capture HD DV with cineform and use that file --

Thanks so much. I used the menu video...

ON the vide menu I found "snapshot source frame".

This let me save as bmp and I am very happy it works.

Is there any difference between snapshot source or output frame?
Is there any difference between snapshot or copy to clipboard?
Noth questions couched in terms of output quality.
