What formats play on dvd players?

i made a vcd for a friend and i made it as a mpeg-2 but it didn't work on his dvd player, iknow that only one brand of cd-rs work on his player so i thought it must be because it was an mpeg-2.
so i was wondering if anyone knew what formats if any besides mpeg-1 work on dvd players?
if other formats work does anyone have any ideas why the mpeg-2 didn't work?

There is an very well documented answer to your question.
1 - go to the left bar and click on: DVD player compability list.
2 - search for the DVD player, and you might find the answer.
