I have used many capture ystems. I have found that our latest Panasonic has the greatest "Wife Acceptance Factor" of all of it.

Maybe if I get my HTPC sorted out that might be better but I have a sneaky suspicion it won't - say unless DNNA's ReplayTV cPC software comes out much better than people are hoping or Yahoo makes the Meedio to Yahoo Go software a killer app.

I have a LITEON 1107HC1 that I like a lot. Its - and + RW and has firewire in. It doesn't have a stereo rf tuner but you can record stereo off of a stereo vcr through av inputs. Its a clean simple design and playsback divx as well.

For stuff I want in stereo I capture on the pc with my fusion hdtv gold t 3 capture card. Then I burn with my new pioneer 111

I mainly use rw's on my dvd recorder and stuff I want to save I rip to the pc and edit it to a nice -r or +r disc to keep

The 3 hour mode is acceptable quality for archiving in my opinion. The 4 hour and 6 hour modes are really meant for marothons you intend to watch once and not keep imo. The 6 hour mode is watchable but its vcd mode and not much better than videotape. But the 6 hour isn't pixalated so its still acceptable for occasional use. Maybe for sports recordings you just want to watch once but not repeatedly.

Now if you mean actually getting on a dvd right away is faster with a settop than yes of course. That is one nice thing about the settop units. You can record straight to disc without waiting to author later. And if you want to do some editing just rip it to the pc and reauthor it

I record on TIVO and or RePlayTV DVR and then if it is something I want to keep record it on one of two set-top DVD recorders.. an Ilo [LiteOn] or Magnavox[Philips].

I actually do a few of those things.

I record to my DVR & DVD-RW. If it is something that is kind of unpredictable as to the length, I'll take an educated guess how long it will run, minus commercials, and then re-record it while playing it back from the DVR with tweeked settings on the dvd recorder if needed.

I use a Pioneer DV-220/225, which allows you to change your record mode by 10 minute incriments, thus allowing you to use the majority of the disc instead of getting stuck with 1/2/4/6 hour record modes.

I will also do some quick & dirty captures with my analog video capture card, but the ease & quality that the DVD recorder allows has almost eliminated this.

I do plan on purchasing an OTA HDTV capture card in the future, just not sure what to get yet.

I have several Toshiba SX-34, D-4; JVC dm-10; Panny ES-10; Pioneer 225, 520-H....I use them all for different things.. Have some others that I have personal put Hanglose around that gave me trouble & an example to the rest that they can also hang if the screw up a recording.

IMHO, the picture quality is definately good. More bare-bones, if you ask
me, though quality is definately good, @ $220 price is just right

Really nice machine. Too bad I replaced it with a 640hs. Had to have a HDD and ran out of video inputs on my Receiver.
But I think I'll unhook the Laser Disc since it now gets very little use.
Anyway I find these Pioneers really good and easy to learn. And the price I got the 640hs for was mind blowing.

Interesting, its a statistical deadheat between liteon, panasonic, and pioneer.

And that 18% use a pc/dvr instead of a dvd recorder.
