need advice for wireless setup

I have a dell dimension 8100 desktop now and I will be buying a laptop. Exactly pieces of aquipment do I need to get to in order to use my laptop anywhere in the house? I have broadband connection. I am new to this so please let me know what I need to buy to make it work.

if you need internet on your laptop then you need wireless access point and wireless network cards installed on the machines you want to use internet on... check your laptop: many of the laptops have their built-in wireless receivers, others have their pcmcia slots where you can put the pcmcia wireless card

Depends on where your telephone/cable connection enters the house.

I have a telephone socket in my office so I've connected a Belkin FD7632-4 ADLS modem that is both wireless and has four LAN ports for direct connection.

My PC is connected via LAN but my laptop and girlfriends PC are connected via wireless.

She's using a Belkin wirelss adapter that plugs into a USB port and my laptop has built in wireless.

Even if you do not attempt to connect to the router via LAN, I'd still advise you to get one with LAN capability to be able to set it up initially and for diagnostic purposes if the wireless connection fails.

if you'll buy adsl wireless modem from isp and later will decide to switch to the cable isp you'll need to buy their cable wireless modem and will have no use for adsl wireless modem... it's better to buy a regular access point such as linksys wireless router and connect it to whatever you have: adsl and/or cable modem

I agree - right up to the last bit.............

Always assume something will go wrong and plan for the eventualities.

I have a one year old Belkin (as mentioned) which got top marks in all reviews at the time......

.........it now needs a hard reset about one a week.


Having two boxes instead of one doubles the chance of failure.....

It is not easy to setup two boxes. Most residence user just want to get to the internet, not spending time, reading manul, flashing firmware, trying cable and combination, and get that "you get not use my company router" from tech support...

If you have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, I would suggest replacing it with a 5.8 GHz to avoid interference with your wireless connection. It operates on the same frequency and can degrade the signal or in some cases, cause you to lose the signal.
Also, avoid a lot of metal between you and the access point.
