Hi, was wondering (since I need it for editing),
which models have firewire that works in both directions.

The master list indicated whether the unit 'has' firewire or not, but not if it can handle in and out.

And of the ones you can recommend which is best?

    Cheers

Pioneer made the only ones that work both ways. The hard drive models are the DVR-510H-S and DVR-520H-S. The disc-only models are the DVR-310-S and DVR-320-S. One thing to note is that the video must be recorded to the hard drive or disc before it can be exported via the DV link. It doesn't do live pass-through of the incoming video signal the way a Canopus box does.

Can anyone confirm those models are capable of that, and any other DVD recorders with hdd that can transfer video from their hdd to pc via 1394 or USB2. Pref Pioneer.

Would the above method be quicker at transfering video to pc, compared to burning a DVD on the recorder from it's hdd, then placing that in the pc, and extracing the video that way, yes/no?

What kind of confirmation do you want? I've captured DV video via Firewire link to my Mac from my Pioneer DVR-510H's hard drive. It is a real-time transfer.

If you have a DV camcorder or an analog-to-DV converter you can do the same thing with any DVD recorder via the recorder's S-video and analog audio outputs.

I think the manuals for those models are still available for download at pioneerelectronics.com. You'll see that they describe the iLink (Firewire) as both DV in and DV out.

If it is on your recorder's hard drive, than a video should be in mpeg2 format, right?
Is it possible to transfer that mpeg2 to your Mac via Firewire link or the transfer goes in real time in DV (avi) format, only?
    Thanks

The source video must be MPEG encoded either on the HDD or on disc, and the output is DV only via Firewire. There isn't much benefit to this feature because of those limitations, but it does work and can be a time-saver compared with software conversion to DV on slower computers. Also, I was able to capture directly into iMovie. When doing a software DV conversion on the Mac I'd have complete the conversion and then import the DV video file to iMovie. This results in the DV video getting written a second time which is slow and requires twice the amount of hard drive space.

Also, DV import from the Pioneer isn't processor intensive for the Mac, as is software conversion.
