I'm looking for a good reasonably-priced printer mostly for JPEG photos and occassionally for text. I've been looking at the Canon iP4200, but I have heard the ink isn't cheap and it can't be refilled due to chips in the ink tanks. Also seems to only like Canon paper (surprise!) from reviews I've read.

Anyway, can anyone recommend a good quality photo printer that doesn't smear (like my old HP printer does), ink is reasonably priced, and has low maintenance costs?

See if you can pick up an older version of the one you mention on somewhere like eBay - they're numbered just in the 1,000's (i.e. no 200). The ink can be refilled on these.

I have a Canon iP5000 and it's awesome. I buy ink in bottles that give me about 10 refills, but each bottle is just a bit cheaper than one ink cartridge.

The iP4000 is virtually identical to the 5000, the only difference being that it's printing is down to 2 pico-litres, whereas the 5000 is 1 pico-litre (i.e. more refined).
There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

    Carpe diem.

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room.

    I have the Canon 5200..
Prints well on HP photo Paper
Prints well on Staples Photo Paper
Prints well on Canon photo Paper

Hell, I even print on 8 1/2 by 11 regular copy paper
when I want to mail a draft to someone, plenty good.

Don't forget, to be honest, inkjet printers use...
    ink and need drying time.....
