I've installed a dual format Pioneer 111D writer in my HP media center pc, which is originally a DVD+R format only.. But cannot get it to work.. The system recognizes the drive but the writer won't recognize any media.. I also have a HP +R writer installed and it works fine, but the Pioneer will not read or write. So an HP system will not accept writers made by other manufacturers?

I played around with the master/slave settings and nothing.. Unfortunately I installed both writers on the same channel (to avoid pulling out everything from the small/mid ATX housing---a pain!).

    Can someone advise?? Thanks.

Edit: Every R1 DVD I throw in there spits out a 'dirty disc error'.. and AnyDVD gives an error, saying Region Code may be incorrect (but I checked--it's correct at R1).

So the Pioneer drive won't read any DVD or CD burnt or pressed?
    Things to try,
Try disconnecting the HP drive and see if the Pioneer will work.
Try using Cable Select and the drive on the end of the cable will be the master drive.
Try the drive on the Primary channel with your boot drive.
Try the drive in another machine?
If none of these work, you may just have a bad drive, haven't seen that in a long time though.

Correct.. The Pioneer will NOT read or write any DVD.. commercial or pressed. I changed the Pioneer to select setting and the pc booted up and recognized both writers (the Pioneer and the HP), but the Pioneer still won't do anything. Again, I have both writers on the same channel (secondary IDE).

I will try placing the Pioneer on a separate channel and see what happens, as well as the other options you mentioned, and report back. Thanks for responding.

This is a long shot, have you replaced the IDE cable? I haven't touched an HP for a long time, but if they're like Dell they use cheap cables that aren't 80-pin, like Pioneer recommends. Also, have you tried just the Pioneer drive, just to see if it works when alone?

Damn, this is frustrating.. I tried suggestions and nothing.. the Pioneer is recognized by the system, PowerDVD auto opens but can't play. The lights are working/flashing on the pioneer but PowerDVD give me this error: error code 8902003 . And yes, I tried unplugging HP drive but nothing..

I don't think it's a bad drive b/c I did a search and found someone else to have the same problem with a different manufactured drive and got a replacement drive with the same result. Any more suggestions?

80 strand cables aren't needed for CD/DVD drives - they are about 10X too slow to need them.
An 80 strand cable would only be needed if the DVD drive was chained with a 133 UDMA HD.

OK.. I don't know what happened but it's working now after removing IDE cable from the HP writer. I tried before but it did not work.. (??). I think once I install the HP on a separate IDE channel..all should work out. Thanks for everyone's help and hope this thread helps others with same issue.
