Adding subs to a video file - which program to use?

Before I was thinking of making this thread I looked at the guides on this great site.. (how to add subs to a video file)

But those guides are for DVD to DVD (you put a dvd in your dvd rom and use dvdshrink) and use the IFO, VOB, BUP

What programs/guide do I need to use to get an avil file on a DVD with subs?

I recond "VSO ConvertXtoDvd" must be one of the best for that. Just put your video and sub files in a folder, give them the same name withe different extnsion load the video file in VSO ConvertXtoDvd, the sub. file will auto load, if doesnt do it manually, and the way you go. You can adjust the subs to the video with Subtitle Workshop before "VSO ConvertXtoDvd".
Cucusoft AVI to VCD DVD MPEG Creator Pro is another good program.
I've tryed many tutorials and programs. you have to be a guru to follow them.

Some guide's do leave alot to be admired , but most only require you to follow step by step .

Freeware is more accesible to newbies ... so my guide's atleast wont cost you nothing apart from the time it take's to download the tool's and follow the guide .

There is very little you can not do with freeware .

If you are converting to DVD-compatible MPG, any one of those guides should work.

If you want, as stated, an AVI file on the DVD, for playing in a Divx compatible player, try AVISub. I just started testing this for my Philips 642 and it does work. The font and color choice do not seem entirely accurate, though I am still testing. Subtitles do appear and are switchable, this is with an Xvid file.

First, I don’t need to put subtitles on movies with English audio (that Understand)
Second, if I have a movie with audio in a foreign language, that I don’t understand. How am I going to type the subs???? How do I create any subs?

Is there any program in which I can type subtitles by looking at frames? I am trying the guide that Bjs mentioned above and so far so good.
Now I am planning to add subtitles to my pictureshow, here sound is not important but the picture is important so I am looking for something where I can look at the frames and add subtitle.
Any suggestions?

So I tried using "VSO DIVXtoDVD" but after I burned it and tried watching it on dvd I didn't have the subs.. I checked in the menu with the thought I didn't enabled it yet but that wasn't the problem.

I'm talking about The Bourne Identity which I'm trying to put on DVD with subs, I have a folder somewhere on my C with the following files:

The Bourne Identity.avi (the video itself)
The Bourne Identity.sub (the subtitles)

So I named them exactly the same like someone mentioned above, I opened VSO DivxtoDVD and dragged the video file into the program, as mentioned above the subtitle with the same name will automatically get into it too? I checked "subtitling" and it says: 1 chanal
so I try to open "subtitling" by pressing the "+" sign and it gives the following errors:
