  1. Hi all,

I'm having a problem with my Sony DRX-710UL. It will not read any CDs that I put into it but it will read DVDs fine. I have updated the firmware to the latest version but still nothing.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Steve.

Did you update the firmware BEFORE or AFTER these symptoms started appearing?

If it was fine before the update, then the update can be a problem. If not, then it's possible the CD laser is shot.

Please let us know what was the original scenario so we can further assist.

    Cheers!

  3. The problem was there before the firmware upgrade, hence me doing it.

So do you think that the lense might need cleaning or something? Just seems very strange that it can read DVDs fine though...

    Thanks for your help

    Uobirac,

Have you updated your CD buring software? Try updating your software to see if that helps get the CD burning part going. If not, try another burning program altogether and see if that does the trick.

If not, your cd laser may be done, but let's try other software first, ok?

Let me know what software(s) you try, ok?

    Cheers!

  5. Well I don't think that's going to make any difference because it can't actually read any CDs at all, let alone burn any. I've also tried the burner on another PC and the same thing, so looks like its the lens..

    Uobirac,

Don't feel too bad - the one and only Sony burner I've ever owned died with a fast-blinking LED syndrome and I was never able to resurrect it. Only had it for 14 months, but damn it was annoying.

Best wishes to you, and may your next burner serve you very well for a very long time.

    Cheers!

  7. Hmm well that's not very comforting! Does anyone know if there's actually a way to fix the problem perhaps by cleaning the lens or something?

Did you try cleaning yet? Not that I think it will help. I think, like everyone else, you need a new drive.

I have never had to clean a lens - unless you work in a room full of smoke or make a habit of using filthy discs that deposit their muck into your drive, I doubt you have to either.

It is not uncommon for drives to have seperate optics for CD and DVD use. It sounds like the one responsible for the CD aspect is US.

  10. I haven't tried cleaning the lens but if you don't think it'd help, I'll probably look into getting another drive or just living with it!

Drives are cheap enough these days that if it's out of warranty it'e probably become landfill / ebay fodder.

In fact I've just looked at the cost of a generic lens cleaner (ie a disc with with bristles on it that probably knocks dust off a lens with the subtlety of a nuclear warhead) and the price between that and a new writer was less than £10 !
