Cutting out a chunk of an avi (instead of splitting it in two)

Hi,
Is there a way to cut out a piece of an avi without having two split it in two?
In Virtualdub you just pick the starting point, the ending point and it pulls out that piece.
Is there any way to do this or do I simply have to split the avi several times to get my clip?

I've searched the forum and so far I found out about splitting tools in ffmpegx, d-vision, and explicit.

you can do this with mpeg streamclip.

1. select the in and out points (move the playhead in the timeline to the spot you want, press 'i' or 'o')
2. 'cut' the part you don't want. (command-x)
3. 'save as' the new file.

I think you are best to set your in and out points at 'i' frames Do this by using the up and down arrow keys on your keyboard.
If you don't do this, mpeg streamclip will have to re-build the frames around the edit - and for that you have to have a compatible encoder installed.

Thanks a lot. I was able to cut out the video very easily but there was no audio.
When I checked the file info, MPEG Streamclip didn't detect there was an audio track.

Video PID is 0, Audio PID is 0, and there isn't an Audio Mode.
Does that have something to do with it?

You could also try Quicktime Pro if you have it. Just select the part you don't want and choose edit:cut

It all kind of depends on what video and audio are contained in your avi.

I guess you need to find out if there really is any audio.
When you open it in qt player, is there sound?
Also try opening it with vlc or mplayer. If there is sound there, but not in qt player, then you are missing the proper codec(s). That will propogate into mpeg streamclip.

Find this out, and report back please.

I've tried doing this with my Xvid AVI files and get 'ERROR, can't write movie file'. I installed the save as AVI QT component too.

Anyone help me save a chunk of an Xvid AVI without recompressing?

I *think* you don't need the 'save as AVI' component in the newer versions of Mpeg Streamclip.
What you may need it is the xvid encoder - for sure you'll need it if you didn't make your edit on keyframes.

try downloading the latest version of streamclip, and xvid component and give it another go.

I installed the DivX decoder and it solved the problem.

I guess you'd need the xvid decoder for xvid movies.

avidemux will do on mac os x approximately what virtualdub does on windows.

it can split, join, and edit .avi and mpeg files and also offers re-encoding options if you need them.

avidemux requires X11, which can be installed from your os x installer cd/dvd.

ffmpegx requires knowing the exact spot and only splits

d-vision is pretty much the same since finding the spot with the minimalist visual chooser is worse than QT.

MPEG Streamclip doesn't like xvid.

I haven't a clue how to get avidemux to function. Looked into installing X11 which i know nothing about, other than what it is, and found out i already had it installed. Grabbed avidemux for PPC, which when tried, bounced and went away.

Tried things. Googled things. Read things. Read more things which were way over my head. Never got the beast to come up. What's the trick?

Or is there a new tool?

• You could get any chunk with two splits, right?
• MPEG Streamclip seems to like the XviDs I have just fine. I do have the DivX Decoder.component from DivX.com installed, which may have helped. Set select in, set select out, regular Save As to the desktop.

I'm having the same problem with avidemux. I can't get it to work. Should I install it through the terminal?
