Philips DVP642/37 firmware and subtitles question

First of all, I tried to update the firmware of the player, after I followed all the instructions given out by Philips, my dvd player continues to say "637/37 01E1" on the software check screen ["569 Ok"]. It didn't change at all from what I previously had, which was the same thing. The reason why I tried to update my machine is because of my doubts on the player supporting .srt files. I downloaded an OGM anime file and converted to AVI with soft subtitles, but the machine freezes on it [black screen with PLAY at the top]. Well, I have no clue if I updated it or not.

Later: never mind. I figured out how to update the machine now. Anyway, I'm still wondering about the compatibility with .SRT files.

It only plays .srt subs.....

select those on the menu & push the subtitle button & then select your film and push the play button.
