You could download the free flip4mac wmv component for Quicktime. See if the file plays in Quicktime with the component, and the you can export it to other formats using Quicktime Pro or QTAmateur (freeware).

I had some avi files with wmv3 video. They played in Quicktime without sound. So I exported them to Xvid (video only) with QTAmateur and the Xvid component for Quicktime. I exported the sound using ffmegx movie audio to mp3 setting. Then I muxed the avi in ffmpegX.

There are some files however, that don't run even with wmv component.

I've done a couple test with wmv files and ffmpegX and you can do a limited amount.

First off get the flip4Mac wmv codec for quicktime. And then open the files up in quicktime and save them as a self containted movie.
If you then encode using and video codec using (ffmpeg) under the options area you can decode with quicktime and it will work just fine.
