I'm sure this topic has come up before, but I didn't find it in the other topics. I am editing videos using avid free dv on my mac os x system, and I need to convert the files I'm exporting as mov files to either avi or wmv. I don't have a PC at my home, so I really need a converter program that runs on a mac.

If anyone can steer me in the right direction, I would really, really appreciate it! Thanks so much!

DV is DV. If you are editing DV on a Mac, the DV is encapsulated by Quicktime's MOV headers. When you work on a PC, DV is usually encapsulated by MS's Directshow or VfW AVI headers. It's the basically the same codec, just (on the PC side) referenced to different fourCC codes. Therefore:

    Easiest thing to do is...

    1. Render/Mixdown/Export your finished program to a single DV MOV file (or Reference QT file linking segments if 1 individual filesize would be to big).
    2. Open QTPro Player and load the MOV file. Select "Export" / "Movie to AVI". In the "Options" button / "Video" settings, choose a DV codec--"Apple DV/DVCPro NTSC" or "Radius DV", etc--as Video codec type and @29.97fps,"millions" of colors, and linear PCM (uncompressed/none), 16bit, 2ch/Stereo, 48kHz for audio.
This will save as a DV-AVI file of Type2, and will be recognized by the default DV fourCC (usually Microsoft).
    >>>edit: remember to add the ".AVI" file extension<<<

Not much else would need to be done for them to be recognized fine on a PC, unless that particular system used DV-AVI type1 files exclusively, in which case you would need a DV "type converter". Look in the <--Tools section or do a Google search for some good ones (couple of free/sharewares and at least 1 very good commercial app).
