Hi there, i am converting an xvid avi file. I am including a background and an image button.
I have converted it and when i play back the burnt dvd, it's almost as if it's zoomed in slightly, ie it's not showing the same amount of video as the original Xvid does.
Any ideas ?
Thanks.
Azza_b
P.S. I've loaded the avi up into s2d again and clicked on it to get it's properties, they're listed as follows :
Video Type : mpeg4
TV Standard : PAL
Resolution : 592x320
Total Bitrate : 1076Kbps
Audio Type : mp3
Sample Rate : 48000
Audio Bitrate : 160kbps
I have edited my registry setting in the past to force a Full-D1 conversion, whether this has anything to do with it ?
I've just thought that i may as well post the log!! Here it is :

Hmm, odd, i think it could be something to do with my player settings.
I've played the .VOB file through DivXplayer and it is exactly the same size as the original avi file. As a test i'm comparing the opening credit titles, and when i play it on my DVD some words are missing, but when run through DivXplayer they're there ok....
I'm wondering whether i should have tinkered with my DVD player's setup...
Does this sound familiar to anyone ?
Thanks.

Are you playing the burnt dvd in your stand alone player out to your TV? If so, what you are aeeing is normal on a TV and is called "overscan". A video window on your PC has no overscan area, so you get the whole picture.
-
Hi, yes i'm playing the burnt dvd out on a player to my tv.
How can i stop this from occurring on my standalone player ? Can i mess around with the 4:3/16:9 settings ? As obviously this behaviour is not wanted as you're missing part of the movie...
Or is there any setting i can change conversion-time to stop this happening/reduce overall screen size ?
Thanks
Azza_b -
It's not happening on your standalone player, it's happening on your TV. All CRT based TV's overscan the picture so you don't see crap at the edges.
The only way to "fix" this is to encode your video with a black border of 5 to 10 percent of the frame. That way the black border will be in the overscan area of the TV.
This problem turns up nearly every day here. Search the forums for overscan and subtitles. -
OK, will do, thanks for the searching tip.
I'm wondering whether playing about with the screen-type of the tv may make a difference, i.e. play about with the zoom/smart/4:3/16:9 settings..
Thanks.

Hi again all, ok so i did some searching and understand the "overscan" issue with tv's... In the posts however, there were no mentions of actually how you would place some borders to correct this issue.
Is this something you can achieve with s2d or will i have to use another program ? Has anyone got some simple instructions or a link to somewhere that shows how to do it as i'm a complete novice with all this!
Would changing the "Apply Pan & Scan Info" setting in s2d have any affect whatsoever ?
Many thanks,
Azza_b -
Azza_b: I will add an option to deal with overscan. Drop me an email & you can test the feature.

I've sent you another email Chris with my test results...
Azza_b -
Doing a search on here and elsewhere, i've been unable to find out if tv's apply overscan to the top and bottom of pictures ? Is it applied on all sides or just the left and right ?
Azza_b -
OK cool, Chrissboy has implemented a registry setting that can take into account this overscan problem.
I've used an initial setting of 25 pixels and it seems to have worked nicely, any more and i was getting black bars appearing on the left and right.
I guess it'll now be a case of me changing the setting depending on the height/width of the original source file and hopefully get some "standard" settings....
Azza_b -
no you should not have to. The size aspect ratio is calcuated as before, then the overscan setting is added.
If 25 pixels works for you - it will be this value for all cases.SVCD2DVD v2.5, AVI/MPEG/HDTV/AviSynth/h264->DVD, PAL->NTSC conversion.

Oh bloody marvellous! That saves me from a headache then!
Excellent, thanks for the special feature too Chris, really appreciate it.
Azza_b
P.S Was 25 pixels a lucky guess -
Well with the various zoom/wide/smart options available on most tv's i can't see it being that much of an issue, and if it is i'll just change the setting!
