I am trying different guides to rip DVD and I don't quite get along with VirtualDub so I decided to go with AutoGK. I also came across FairUse Wizard so decided to give a try to both as I prefer Xvid over DivX.

Now, If I rip DVD to size of 2100mb XviD, then following are the specifications of resultant file:
Using FairUse Wizard, bitrate is 1780kbps, frame size is 672x480 and Qf is 0.221 bits/ pixel
Using AutoGK, bitrate is 1607kbps, frame size is 560x416 and Qf is 0.276 bits/pixel (I don't know what Qf is)

At least, from the numbers, I feel like Fairuse Wizard is compressing video in better fashion than AutoGK but does expert eyes confirm this? I tried to check that but I couldn't figure out any difference but sure there has to be some difference.
    Any explanation?

Same filesize, different bitrates. Could be that the bitrate was too low for 672x480, if so the 560x416 would look better. 640x??? could be a good compromise.

My advice, look at both and decide, but presumbably you could have outputted different resoltions with either if you wanted.

decided to give a try to both as I prefer Xvid over DivX
Don't really get that. The reason for trying FU would be DivX since FU supports DivX6.1 properly and AutoGK doesn't. For XviD I would suggest AR Calcualtor.

Also with fairuse you bought it? You are using my patched build or something else?

If you are using my build, any feed back? Especially if it is 2.2 as I didn't really test that at all.

Sorry celtic_druid, I am not very clear with your reply.

I tried to take a look at both the files but I didn't feel much of the difference and this DVD is also very old so picture clarity is not as we see in current DVDs.

I am newbie in this video conversion and read on many forums that XviD compresses video better way than DivX so I went to DivX otherwise no other reason to go for it.

The reason for trying FU would be DivX since FU supports DivX6.1 properly and AutoGK doesn't.
If somebody wants to use DivX 6.1 then can they not use Dr DivX or DivX converter?

I don't which is your patched build, I downloaded this one from their website long time ago, is there any difference? I can try yours as well.

The maths behind ratio of bitrate to the resolution is bugging me a lot and not getting any definitive answer, if there is any.

The one that you download from their site can only output 700MB's max. Therefor you couldn't output 2100mb. My version is still free, but doesn't have those limits.

My point was to run AutoGK and have DivX6.1 involves editing DivX's dll. FU doesn't have that issue, which is why I thought also came across FairUse Wizard so decided to give a try to both as I prefer DivX over XviD. would be more logical than also came across FairUse Wizard so decided to give a try to both as I prefer Xvid over DivX.

Well the point is that given a low enough bitrate, resizing down before encoding will look better. There is no really clear way to look at a few figures and make that determination though. As I understand it, AutoGK runs compressibility tests to decide what resolution to use, so what it picks should be ok.

I am trying the program that you gave in the post above but I wonder why it output divx as avi file when I have latest divx codec installed, shouldn't it use divx container?
Sure, this program works better than AutoGK, at least numbers say so!!

Divx container is AVI. It's just renamed DIVX.

It is a backwards compatible hack/extension to avi. It adds menus, chapters and tags. Also xsubs and multiple audio streams, but that was already possible with avi.

If you want a divx file. Remux with divxmux, adding subs, chapters, etc.

or you can try tools with a nicer gui

    srt2bmp and avi2sub

both will pick up your avi and add multiple xsubs and produce an divx file with switchable subs like in a normal dvd.

the divx file can be viewed in any divx player sap on the market now.

    for example:

1-rip your starwars dvd to your hard drive.
2-use vsrip to extract the sub streams you want to use(up to 8 can be used) to the idx format.
    3-convert your dvd with avi.Net
4-open avi2sub, load the avi file, load the the subs(idx) and press mux
5- after a few minutes you will have a divx file with switchable subs that plays perfectly on your divx SAP to change subs just press subtitles on the remote like you would do for a regular dvd
I love it when a plan comes together!
