Importing clips from a DVD to use in iMovie...import problem

Hey again all, just a quick word to say a big thank you to everybody who has helped my with my questions in the past...here's a quick one, maybe somebody out there can help me...

Let's say that I'm putting together a DVD, and I have to rip and edit parts from other DVD's that I've authored in the past (meaning I'm not ripping an entire DVD, just a chapter here and a chapter there to put into iMovie HD for me to edit together into a totally new DVD).

So I open iMovie HD, make a new project, and insert the disc. I tried importing right from the disc (just for kicks), and nothing...it won't do it. (I could have sworn I could, but it's been a while since I have done it, I could be wrong here). So then I used MacTheRipper to rip the chapters I needed. It did that, but then when I tried to import the footage into iMovie HD, it won't. What the heck and I doing wrong here? I know that I can do this...can anybody out there please help me with this?

You need an application that will convert the MPEG in the VOB to DV or Quicktime .mov for import to iMovie.

Toast 7 does this by either chapter or entire title.
MPEG Streamclip does this and you can select just the scenes you want to export.
Cinematize does this and you can select chapters or just the scenes you want.
Capty MPEG Edit does this and you can select just the scenes you want to export.

There are other apps, too, but those are ones that I have which can extract and convert just part or all of a DVD to a format readable by iMovie.

iMovie only works with DV or MPEG-4 natively so they must be in one of those two formats unless you want to do conversion.

Edit: Well O.K. it will work with HDV too

Now it's all coming back to me...I should really write this down for later use. Toast 7 works like a charm here...but how do I export just a chapter number, instead of the entire disc?

Click the Media button to enter the Toast 7 Media Browser. Choose DVD with the top Button. Your DVD will appear in the list. With the lower button choose the title you want. The individual chapters should appear in the window. Each one you drag to the Toast video window will be extracted as a separate MPEG file and written to the Roxio Converted Items folder. Be aware that the Toast default is to empty that folder whenever quitting Toast. Change that in Toast Preferences.
