Memorex 16x DVD-R not compatible with Pioneer 531 dvd record

Hello everyone in media section

I was wondering....
I tryed 16 x memorex DVD-R today in my Pioneer 531 HDD dvd recorder....
& it doesn't seem to detect them....

Is there any way to make them work?

I bought them for around 40$ for a pack of 100...
& i can't return them
media is not refundable...


Is it a firmware type of problem?

where did you purchase your media?

everywhere that i have purchased media has accepted returns.. (wal-mart, best buy, fry's)..

it's not like you could "make a copy" of blank media.. you should talk to a manager..

I'm having media problems with my Pioneer 533 (same as 531 but has DV input).

Looks like your Memorex 16x discs are CMC media which don't work on my machine either.

I just bought the unit yesterday and tried various media to see how the unit reacted. Results as follows:

1. Maxell MIJ 8x discs. No problem.
2. Verbatim 16x discs. No problem.
3. No-name Ritek 4x discs. No problem.
4. Philips 8x discs -- CMC Mag -- disk initialization failure or disc not recognized.
5. Teon 8x discs -- CMC Mag -- disk initialization failure or disc not recognized.

Apparently the unit does not like CMC discs. Admittedly this is not a huge surprise as CMC discs tend to be a bit low in quality, but the 533 has a Pioneer 109 drive in it which should not have problems burning them (based on my experience with a Pioneer 108 burner).

I'm surprised because my very old Panasonic E-30 burns both discs moderately well.

My Benq burner burns both very well with quality scores in the 95+ range.

Anyone with similar experiences?
