Nero DVD overburning questions

I have a file, not a bin/cue just a load of files and I want to know how much i can overburn by on my Liteon dvd rewriter?

It currently defaults to 4500mb.

The file I want to burn weighs in at 4536mb (according to nero*), is that possible?

*why does nero report it as 4536, winXP reports it as both 4.42gb and 4,756,940,800 bytes?

Firstly:

4,756,940,800 bytes / 1024 = 4645450 KB
4645450 KB / 1024 = 4536.57 MB
4536.57 MB / 1024 = 4.43 GB


Secondly, I'm not sure you can overburn DVDRs like you can CDRs. If you can, I don't think it would be much over 4488MB (limit for DVD-Rs) or 4482MB (limit for DVD+Rs).

Seriously, I've never heard anyone say you can overburn DVD. I've heard the opposite.

I must have some good disc's here then ... 4.54gig so far one one tdk dvd-r , some others have 30mb's or so more on them , but after that point , they dont work , that's for data .

One movie at 4.6gig , and it works perfectly ... then again , I use tdk for everything . It works on my 3 players here , but as the rules go , other players may not appreciate trying to play them ...

i kind of have the same problem. i have 13 video files that i want to put onto a dvdr. all together, it is about 4.42gb. when i try to burn it with nero, it says that i am 50mb too big for a dvdr. does anyone have suggestions on how i can burn it onto one dvdr or make the files smaller so it will fit?

Author the files into DVD files (if they aren't already), then use DVDShrink.

I had the same once I took a chance and overburned it showed only 30 meg over .. to make the story short ended up with coaster. As mentioned dvd doesn't have much extra space worth risking.

Use TMPGEnc DVD Author. It will protest that the files are too big for a DVD5, but lets you continue anyway. Author to HDD. Then, run DVDShrink on your files from TDA, to squeeze it down a little.

I believe there are a few select burners out there that are capable of limited overburning on +R media (The Plextor 712A/716A can according to emperor of cdrinfo.com (see the thread here.

I am unsure of how much you could actually gain, but I doubt it would be much. Keep in mind that the media used will also likely play a role in how much you might be able to gain, if anything. Apparently Nero (not sure what version of 6 it is enable at) has the option to overburn up to 100MB of dada on a DVD +R media, provided the drive supports it.

Some testing might need to be done, and should be done in by slowly increasing the amount of data to be written. Any attempts at overburning are done at your own risk.
