  1. For me that's bad. I'm getting ready to build a new pc and had to cross-off the Sony burner after the whole DRM virus-kit technology fiasco. NEC was topping my list but now I need to cross them off too.

This could be good or bad. Sony Burners are by far the worst burners I've come across. You may find a decent one out there and I have too but for the most part Sony Burners don't last very long or fail to perform certain functions properly. I see more Sony Burners and Roms in my shop then any other brand. With NEC joining Sony the end product will hopefully improve. NEC is a good, reliable, and cheap burning component.

Sony burners = Lite-on and if I recall correctly it was announced ages ago that NEC would be using OEM lite-on drives.

but NEC is an OEM and makes shit loads of parts (and controllers) anyway ... why would they oem from someone else?

nec is a funny company ... they make a lot of stuff under thier own and other names ..... but totally pulled out of the consumer market years ago (they made some damm fine video equipment) .. but they they are huge in the commercial side of things .. they do have also some of the best commercial plasma panels (highest res also) and some really great video projectors up into the 80,000$ range (they have a joint venture deal with DPS on high end projectors) ..

In the next-generation optical disc market the company will manufacture drives for both the HD-DVD format, of which NEC is a major backer, and Blu-ray Disc, of which Sony is a leading supporter, both companies said.
Why dont they just stop F**KING about and make a dual format drive in one.

I'm quite sure dual format drives will eventually make it onto the PC scene. It took time when standards camp (-r) and greedy camp (+r) decided to bed down together in one drive.

NEC currently ships 1.5 million DVD burners a month . . . I bought 10 last month and 6 so far this month. Just bought an NEC3550 for a 64 bit system I'm building so make that 7 this month. It's good to know I'm a small part of this statistic.
