Ok I'm sure this has been asked in the last year or so but I though a new roll call would be intersting.

I have 2 working stereo vcrs. One 4head one 2head. Nonsvhs models.

I voted, YES. Because..

In use approx 98% of the times for everything, from TV to VHS viewing
and capturing.

I don't think I'll ever give it up just yet. It still has plenty of
use for my purposes. Plus, even though I have transfered a number of
my VHS tapes to DVD-R 's, ..something or device or I learn a new'er
or better method of transfer process, seems to always come my way and
I find myself having to re-try my hand at the transfer process all
over again. And, I think I am nearing that re-do process all over again
soon, thanks to learning/refining new'er methods in my processes. Hay..
this *is* my hobby. So, it's ok.. really. It's ok, ..cause its my hobby

I have aDVD recorder, but no DVR. My Panny VCR is just the best choice for when I just want to record something for a single viewing.
Plus I have over a 1000 vhs tapes, been recording boxing since 1981, so when my Panny dies, I'll be buying another VCR.
I also have a Synphonic cheapo VCR, I keep that one at my girlfriends.

I use only the Sanyo DVD/VCR recorder to dub old VHS directly to DVD. Have another JVC that plays PAL tapes and outputs to NTSC that I use sometimes to convert as well.

I still have one working VCR. They don't seem to last long for me. As soon as I finish backing up my old VHS tapes, it's going to the closet or a yard sale.

S-VHS VCR timers are still more reliable than DVD recorder timers, so I use them as backup recording devices for when the DVD recorders fail to start.

Just sent my Sharp H-95 VCR(6Head with NICAM stereo) for repair. PSU was faulty. Had it for about 10 years. Now, I use it for backup VCR to DVD.

Attached to my PC for converting to DVD. Mainly for off air tapes.

Panasonic NV-HV61:
Mainly used for watching VHS on my main television but also has a jet rewind facility, which is useful for saving the winder mechanism on my JVC. Also, this is connected to my DVD Recorder and record mainly pre-recorded VHS to DVD.

Panasonic NV-HD90:
Older VCR which is currently on loan to my girlfriend

Amstrad 8800:
Attached to my Hi-Fi and currently used as a high quality tape deck, mainly to record old vinyl.

Dear Lord! Some of you guys have more VCRs than I have computers!

I bought a rather "state-of-the-art" SVHS model (Panasonic NV-HS960) a couple of years ago when my previous model started chewing tape.

I have been using it to transfer some VHS recordings from TV and camera and I still keep it commissioned for the odd tape transfer request and also for scheduling critical recordings when I am not at home.

I used to schedule for backup every recording a few months ago - when I was recording to my PC but since I got a Media center HTPC, things are more reliable.

The only problem with PCs is that even when they are suspended between recordings, a power failure sometimes results in the PC staying off and the recording is missed. The VCR on the other hand is more reliable. If there is power during the scheduled recording, it will be recorded. (PCs have a long way to go to reach this level or reliability).

Of course. I bought my first one, an Emerson, in 1986, and I've only had two others since then. Currently using black Panasonic Omnivision about two years old.

I have (2) JVCs and a Panasonic. I rarely use them but will hang on to them because a good portion of our home video is on VHS. Yes I have converted all of the home vidoe to DVD but you just never know!

JVC HR-S5902 SVHS (a recent purchase this year) and a Panasonic PV-8660 (VHS)... I use both for taping things off of TV... I also use the SVHS' tuner for my iLo DVDR04 (while recording on to tape as well)...

Still own several (including a PAL and a JVC SVHS/TBC). However, they are for playback for capturing now. I use my home PC now for recording.

We got rid of our last VCR back in 1999, sold all our tapes at that time as well. I was glad to see it go away and haven't looked back.

I never had so much VCR's but only use them for playback and digitize older recordings now.
All PAL machines...

SVHS JVC HRS-6700: Worst VCR I ever had!!, only using it as nice tuner for my PVR150 capture card. (Which only works good when I feed it S-Video signals )

SVHS JVC HRS-8600: This really works nice with the built in TBC/DNR stuff, best thing is got it for free at a flea market!.
Also it's being used as quality tuner with my other PVR150 card.

SVHS JVC HRS-7500: Works ok, also picked it up for almost nothing.

VHS AKAI VS-G705: Works great, specially with HQ tapes and "Intelligent HQ" can give fantastic results.

VHS Panasonic NV-HD620: My best VCR for normal VHS playback/digitizing at the moment. Using the passthrough of my D8 camcorder this machine gives me the best overall results.

VHS Panasonic NV-HD640: also great machine, too bad the audio is broken.

VHS Panasonic NV-HV61: not really great compared with my older models..

I have a few other VCR's which are out of order at the moment...

Just realigned one of my old VCRs, and am converting the worthwhile portion of my tapes over to DVD. Funny seeing all the commercials from 1984-85 etc. Once that is done, I'll probably give away most of the tapes, only keeping a few for emergencies and the VCR for converting friends stuff.

A larger, good UPS generally has several times the charging capacity needed for it's battery. Hook it up to a marine type battery and it should be able to run your PC for a few hours, even if the power is out during the record time. Most of mine have much larger batteries connected than it came with, and can keep my PCs going for quite a while. Just be careful and insulate the terminals well, some UPSs will have a strong AC component on the terminals. The caps could be extremely painful as well, but most give you access to just the battery and terminals in a seperate compartment now.

Haven't had any real issues with my cheap ILO recorder either yet..
