I'm backing up a dvd (Tombstone) released in 1997 and it appears that
back then the movie went right in to "play". Instructions on the back cover state
to access the menu press "menu" on your remote.
Can the IFO file(s) be edited to make the menu appear at the start, before playing the movie? Thanks

You really didn't provide a whole lot of useful information. It would have been helpful to know what programs and processes you used to back-up the video.

If you used DVD Shrink, the chances are it eliminated the menu altogether. It often does.

A normal process I use to back-up videos is to rip the entire DVD to my hard drive using DVD Decrypter, blank out or eliminate elements I don't want using VOB Blanker and then shrink the video to fit on a standard DVD-5 using DVD Shrink. There are other methods equally as effective.

There's a wealth of information on this site on how find and use these programs as well as backing up DVDs. Consider searching a bit more and doing some reading.

f....I should have left the backup part out, it may have confused you. What I'm saying is that the original dvd plays this way. So.....if I do back it up will IFO edit be able to edit the ifo(s) so that the menu will appear first. BTW, at the end of playing this dvd, the menu appears. Just NOT at the start. And it has been this way since the day I bought it and it is in pristine condition.

  4. I think you should use PGC Edit.

And change the first play command to point to the menu instead of the main movie. Look for some tutorials on this site.

Yes. It's basically just the firstplay item you want to change to start with the Main Menu instead of the main title. Iwould think that IFOEdit could probably do this - I don't know exactly how though. Of course this will mean that you'll need to burn a backup of the disc, and one problem you *may* face is that unless you have a DL-capable burner, you may need to use a transcoder such as DVDShrink to pull it down to fit a DVD-5.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Thanks, I'll give both a try. Imterestingly, this is a 2hr 09 min movie. Including all the extras the original dvd is 4.36gb disc , so need to shrink.
