avi to DVD gives video left half dark, right half bright

Hi
I am converting a 1.4Gig .avi file to a playable DVD. I have used both Nero Vision Express and Cucusoft's software suite to do the conversion. Both times when I try the burned DVD the video image is quite dark on the left half of the screen, and fine on the right half. The dividing line is vertical, exactly mid screen and quite sharp.

Any ideas what's causing this? How do I fix it?

Do you use any avisynth or virtualdub filters on the way through ?

Ummmm,
Since I don't know what filters are, I would have to say "no."

Both Nero Vision Express and Cucusoft's converter take .avi files and convert them straight to DVD. I wasn't using either avisynth or virtualdub.
