i just picked up a Magnavox MRV640, for next to nothing at best buy over the 4th ($79) open box. I am going to use it for vhs conversions. my problem is with the remote. Can anyone recommend a good remote replacement so i can totally get rid of this pos that came with the recorder? i dont want to spend more than $40, and definitely need one to replace all the other remotes in the house...

by the way, i will be posting my review of this recorder later in the week after a few more tests. so far it pulled off a good copy of a commercial tape (via sima) excellent results at the 2.5 hr setting. i also did a 6 hr recording of the sci fi twilight zone marathon and was very surprised by the outstanding quality at this level. used fuji +rw and phillips media so far.

  2. I bought a Philips PMDVD6 (I think that's the model), at Circuit City, about a month or two ago, for $15, and it is a learning remote. Best $15 I ever spent. They still have it for that much, cause I just saw it, there, over the weekend.
If you are unfamiliar with learning remotes, it means you can "teach" them to do certain functions that the original remote did, in the event that there is not a specific code for your original remote. For instance, I have Dish Network, and no code in the world that I found would work for my satellite reciever. Well, I just "taught" the Philips what the stock Dish remote did, and, now, all is well. I wouldn't reccomend anything OTHER than a learning remote, in this day and age.
    Hope this helps!

that sounds perfect. I was actually looking at the harmony and equivelant models, a little too expensive for me, but for $15 i will try it out, and a circuit city lies within half a smoke distance from here! thanks.

You also may want to check http://www.ofausa.com/, circuit city and best buy carry those remotes as well. I just got a URC10820, 10 device, upgradeable, learning remote to use with my new LiteOn LVW5045 (which comes with the crappiest remote ever) and it works great for the $15 I spent on it.

do you have an ebay account? I have this controller I bought off of ebay

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...787327772&rd=1

I dont know if all learning remotes are created equal, but its got a cool lcd and it glows with a touch of a button. For only 16 bucks even its not a bad buy. I dont use it w/ a dvd recorder, but I guess if all learning remotes can learn any signal I guess it could work

update: I currently use this remote for my Ilo 04, it works great. I'm sure you can find some on ebay still, its got an lcd and its backlit and has macros, its great

  7. One For All remotes have the highest compatibility by far. The buttons last longer than most others too.

    Bondiablo,
What 4 digit code did you use to adapt the URC10820 remote to work with LiteOn LVW5045?
    Thanks, Adam
