How do you store your DVDs? Cases or wallets

If you use the kind of wallets that can be zipped up, it would keep light out and would take up less space than cases. On the other hand, putting DVDs in cases would match the DVDs that I have bought in the store (as opposed to recording them myself). How does everyone else store their disks?

I think cases are probably the best, but I don't have the room. I use individual wallets that store 2 DVDs, one on either side and put them in shoebox sized trays. They have soft Tyvek backing. This way I am able to get 3 to 4 times more DVDs in the same space as the regular cases. I use Caselogic ProSleeve II.

I use a wallet that can be zipped up, each one holding around 100 discs or so. I use cases only for selected movies like LOTR Extended trilogy and star wars trilogy.

I've been buying slimline cases for single and double disc storing, and 3 to 7 disc cases for the larger seasons-type shows. I've been storing the DVD cases in these white drawers you can buy at Walmart for about $6. I now have about 25 of those drawers, each drawer holds about 20-24 cases or so. I also have several large boxes sitting next to my couch with un-cases DVDs that need to be stored (I need to buy more cases, I'm about 500 cases-behind what I need). So, obviously that's not a great method.....lol. I originally started doing it this way so all my DVDs were in the same size/shape storage medium (I hated having some in CD jewel cases).

I am fast running out of space though. Eventually I'm going to have to get a place I can put lots of shelving up, both for my DVDs and all my thousands of books.

The zippered cases way sounded interesting at first, but then when I get new discs, I have to re-alphabetize everything, and just the though of moving all those discs even one time put me off that idea immediately. If alphabetizing isn't done though (and that seems the simplest form of organization for me), that might be an ok way to do it. Certainly not nearly as much space needed, a definate bonus!

Well then, here's something a tad different.

Most of DVD's that I make are in simple paper sleeves, stored in apothecary style drawers in alphabetical order. The drawers exactly fit the width/height of these. Two vertical drawers to a wooden box, painted black. 10 boxes on a computer hutch. Room to grow...

My commercial DVD's stay in their original cases in a multi-shelf rack.

Paper can also scratch. If you want to store them this way, use Tyvek envelopes.

I use slimline jewell cases. I use a large plain white sticker that I get from work to put on the front. I initial the 4 corners of the of the case and write what movie it is in the center of the jewell case. I have a cd/dvd storage that holds 800+ disc, kinda like a bookcase but more shelves. I divide the dvd's buy lettering a-z with a sturdy piece of paper for each letter. When looking for a disc or putting away, I look for the letter movie starts with and put dvd away or take out. Only takes a few sec's to find the movie I want. Here's a pic

I thought of this a long time ago. I just number my DVD's and CD's with a sharpie. I use an Excel spread sheet, for the alphabetizing part. New disk, insert line.
I left a few pages blank at the back of each book, so if I get a new copy of something with more disks, I insert a note that says #134 in back. This has not happened to any DVD's but a couple of CD's are in the back. I also keep the little booklet that comes with them behind the disk, the few that I cared about. I thought I might even start a milnila folder for the bigger inserts, and I thought I would just number them too.
I like this system much better, I hated those broken plastic cases. I could never find the disk for the case. Now I don't have to look, #134 goes in the same place no matter where my daughter put it, or when I find it. I, buy the way, have one book just for her.

Any DVD video disc goes in a DVD case. Most of the ones I have are either doubles, triples, quadruples, and I even have some sextuple cases. For data DVD discs, I use either jewel cases or sleeves. I never use wallets for my discs.

I also use the clear plastic bag ... that the morning newspaper comes in.

... I just stack about 5 at a time in ... some bags have 10 or more in them.

For those in the UK & most of mainland europe 6, 8 and 10-way cases are available from svp.co.uk

But I agree with HatchetMan and use an 800 disk rigid storage unit... I was quite surprised when I got it. I expected it to have a metal-look finish but actually is very high quality - well worth the money 8)

It depends how many you have, if you have a few original DVD box or slim boxes in library looks good if you have many many, Blockbuster and EB games they have these drawers and keep them in sleeves. Album is nice too you can toss through page by page.

I use both. I leave my box sets in the original cases and I have a large wallet pack for most of my "high use" dvds. Then I use a mix of slimline and standard cases for homemade dvds and other miscellaneous projects.

I use wallets it takes up alot less space and seems to be the cheapest. i buy them at a local computer store www.otvtech.com 80 disc wallet for 7 bucks.

A general guideline is to not use any type of packaging that holds the discs on the edge. There are a few weird DVD cases as well as some other gizmos that hold the discs on the edge. These are guaranteed to warp your discs over time which is a major disaster - especially for DVD discs; CD's are a little more tolerant of this abuse.
