If You Own A DVD, Do You Buy The Newer Versions?

If you own a DVD of a movie and a new edition is released do you buy the newer version, or are you content with the version you already have.

I've had a number of movies that this has happened with, such as

The Toxic Avenger
The Breakfast Club
Weird Science
Stripes
Happy Gilmore
Underworld

Most of these just added extra scenes or had original music placed back in the movie, but some were orignally Full Screen and the new version is widescreen. I just can't make myself rebuy the movies.

If its Star Wars then yes of course!

Otherwise if its something like Lord of the Rings were you knew an extended version was being released than I simply wait for the version I want and buy one copy.

Usually I just buy one copy unless its been totally remastered.

If I feel that the new release is superior to my older release, then yes. I have purchased the re-released new versions several times. Extended version, widescreen instead of fullframe, 6 channel audio as opposed to 2 channel, and especially digitally restored image (Gone With The Wind for example). I do NOT purchase a newer release just because it has more "special features". Often they'll come out with a double disc when the movie and quality is identical (The Mummy a couple/few years back). But then again, I rarely watch the special features. Someone who does might just as well fork over the extra cash.

Nope... I don't think the extra few minutes or added DTS track is worth my extra money. I've already GOT it!

I get my money back on eBay selling the older version, so it's really no big deal.

I replace older DVD's that when they were first released, they were letterbox only, and not anamorphic. I've been buying DVD's since they first came out eight years ago, and since I now have a HD widescreen TV, these DVD's don't cut it anymore. Added features rarely make be buy a DVD again.

No. I dont not buy dvds again no matter how much extras or bonus material is included and neither am I interested in those 2 disc set (one disc full of features)

The only movies I have bought to replace is LOTR: Extended Editions and sold my theretical versions on ebay.

I will probably buy only if the new version is much better (disgitally mastered), and has a lot of extra footage. So the chance is 1-2%. It has happened only once so far - I had 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' regular version (and it was 4:3). When the special edition came out, I sold (almost gave away) my copy to my friend (for $1) and purchased the new edition.

The original DUNE is a good one!!! the U.S. version was quite a bit shorter than the U.K./European so i bought that one, but now the longer version is being released in the U.S. so now i will have 4 of them as i have 2 versions from overseas and the original U.S. version 8)

Yeah if footage is added, then the movie makers either have to release it unrated or resubmit it for rating to the MPAA.

I have them seperate to see which of those reasons people look for, simply because it is unrated (because many movies are released this way) or because it has new footage.

I haven't up to this point, but I may for a future Star Wars release. The only reason I would buy a new set is if Lucas fixed all the problems with the current DVDs.(Vader's pink saber, Luke's green saber in ANH, boxes around ties)

The new 'Stripes' extended cut adds what, 1 minute? Big deal... anyone seen it? 'Seed of Chucky' uncut only adds like 1 minute too. At least the new unrated 'Coyote Ugly' adds 6 minutes.

yeah, I find myself occasionally purchasing new releases, but as somebody else had said earlier - it needs to be something worthwhile, and the criteria is ever changing. If I am a huge fan of a movie or series, yeah I'll purchase the extras, and sadly, just for the sake of seeing all there is too see.

what I find bothering me on my trips to futreshop or anywhere where movies are sold, is the marketing gimmick 'unrated' etc... *So far* its been my experience that DVDs when marketed this way, usually have a few extra seconds/minutes where theres is some skin... personally, if I wanted skin I would go get me a skin flick!
to me it really comes off as a sad statement when they re-market a movie based solely on the chance to see boobies.
sadder still is that it works.

I find it to be a total scam done deliberately by companies, but seriously i do not blame them because they cut scenes and cash in first time around and wait a while then add the scenes back in for the second time around and sell it again. Buyers will gladly bend over and get shafted good and proper while thanking companies and they will bend over again and again for the third time/ fourth time etc.

I really hate when they release a new version of a movie. They try to tell me that those new commentaries and deleted scenese are worth it, no way. All I really care about is the actual movie itself, the only way I would be a newer version would be if they somehow enhanced the audio and video by leaps and bounds.

Before they finally restored the scene, you could only find a still from it in an early 80s issue of Playboy magazine.



I'll rent the latest editions of some DVDs that add extra stuff, depending on how interested I am in what the movie is and what's been added.


The ones I buy usually don't have more than one edtion...but if they did, I would consider it.

I buy some new versions.

It depends what film it is, how much the new one is, etc.

An example of this happening to me in the past year was with Akira. I bought the first DVD version for £15. They then released "The Ultimate Collection" which had the old dub for the film so I bought it for £10 at my local HMV. When I got home the cheap gits had the first disc the same and just a different 2nd disc with the old dub. I would of been very annoyed if I spent £15 or more.
