  1. I'm in the mood to replace my Toshiba SD-M1502 because of the infamous 2x rip speed limitation. Which drive is considered the current de-facto in speed and stuff? I want to get the best. I've heard a lot about LiteOn, should I go with them? If you could quote some specific model numbers, that would be great. Tray-loading would be best, I hate slot loaders. Thanks a bunch.

  3. There are a lot of 'current' Pioneer models - 5 or 6 when I checked - which would you recommend? I haven't checked on LiteOn but I'm sure there's more than one.

  4. Cromas, 16X sounds pretty good...

    i have a samsung/compaq 12X dvd-rom i got awhile ago....works great...usually rips around 5-6X...

so...16X should theoretically have a faster rip speed.....of course toshibas (and philips) suck...so that may not be the case....

pioneer and lite-on are prolly the best bargains right now...so go with those....

i think both brands' 16X models sell for around $40....check out http://www.newegg.com

  7. Greg12, not to doubt you or anything, but could you post a pic with that rip speed using a Toshiba ? i've got an Asus with a Toshiba DVD drive, and the max it ever came to was 2.3x

  8. Same here - ASUS with a toshiba 16x, I max out at exactly 2.0x, and 1.0x if I am not using DMA.

Maybe he's talking about DAE, not dvd ripping? That would seem like a normal speed without DMA for DAE on this drive.
