DVDlab -Weird hotspot effect unless background pic is merged

This is in DVDLab
When I added a hotspot area to my menu link and tried the simulation I got big ugly coloured rectangles when the link was active. The only way I can fix this is to merge the background image before adding any links.
This is fine unless I want to change a background after I've finished doing the links.
Is there any solution to this ?

How are you creating the hotspot ?

I'm using the hotspot button on the side toolbar and dragging the area I want to be the hotspot. If the background pic isn't merged first the hotspot are becomes coloured when the mouse hovers over it during menu simulation.
