Loss of quality

Hello, I have created a home movie DVD and noticed the quality isn't that great. If I trace my steps back and review the process in making this video, I noticed it was when I converted the file to MPG from AVI that I lost the quality. Is there anyway to use an AVI file in DVD LAB (Which is what I'm using to make the DVD). If not, how can I go about getting the best quality. I have an AVI to work with and want to output to a DVD. Thanks.

I would suggest using good quality MPG2 converters such as TMPGEnc, Canopus, MainConcept, etc. More info is available in Tools section.

you probably encoded the avi to mpg using too low a bit rate thus the lower than original quality. If you are not careful in your settings you will always end up with a lesser quality MPG2. As was stated previously, get yourself a good quality encoder and read the guides as there are tons of settings to learn.

What are you using to convert to mpeg, what's your source file properties and what is the mpeg properties that your converting too.

What is your source file. Is it DV, is it merely tagged with .avi and it is actually an Xvid/Divx/MP4...etc.... Without knowing the source, you really can't ascertain what type of result you should expect. If it is an uncompressed AVI file take from DV footage, I'd imagine your encoder's bitrate is too low. Otherwise, I'm going to assume your source is not that great to begin with.
