I've been surfing around and I found this site that claims to have created a new VCD format "CVCD" they claim to be able to fit up to 130 Min of VCD video on one 80 minutes cd, with better or equal quality to a regular VCD.
You can create this CVCD using flask multipass, avisynth, tmpeg and nero.
I tried to create one but I couldn't, since I wasn't able to make tmpge to open the avisyth file I created with flask.(I'll aprecciate any help regarding this issue)
Here's the link: http://www.vcdsp.com the site is in Spanish, I can trasnlate any part for you, but only if you are willing to help.

Try StreamFab Downloader and download from Netflix, Amazon, Youtube! Or Try DVDFab and copy Blu-rays! or rip iTunes movies!

Disable the Directshow Plugin in the environmental settings of TMPGEnc to get it to load avisynth scripts. Also make sure you have downloaded and installed AVISynth (testing it is described in the readme included in the zip file), this can be found at videotools.net
-
Compress VCD sounds interesting but it sounds not not that compatible with DVD Players
-
It is supossed to be as compatible as a regular VCD, in Spain they are using it a lot they claim it's playable on most stand alone DVD players. I'm trying to get a sample so we can burn it an test it.
I still can't open avisynth files on tmpge, already try uncheking directshow.I get the following message "IPCSource:Unable to connect to server"
Please help, so I can upload a sample CVCD.

I just did a 10 second test between SeVCD, VCD and CVCD. The quality was about the same for all three but the filesizes and encoding time (PIII 733Mhz, 256mb RAM) were:
SeVCD: 1.6mbs, 50 secs
VCD: 1.9mbs, 65 secs
CVCD: 1.2mbs, 35 secs
As you can see the winner is CVCD! I still haven't checked if it works on my Aiwa DV-170 though. But I think that if your DVD Player is compatible with XVCD, it can play CVCD.

Maybe I'm missing something here but how exactly is this a "new format"? It just sounds like XVCD with vbr encoding and a lower than standard audio bitrate. Been there, done that. Is there more to it?
-
Well, how do these things look?
I personally make XVCDs whenever possible now at DVD resolution and 2300 bitrate. But I am always curious in trying new little methods and templates that attempt to put more on a CDR.

I think I may be missing something as well.... because everything Ive read from that site sounds as if they are creating a xVCD just with lower bitrate than 1150

Maybe its just xVCD, but it shows you how to fit 120 mins with great quality. Before if people wanted 120 mins on 1 CD the quality would be terrible. CVCD is basically xVCD but uses a new technique so that quality is good too.

I switched the CVCD from PAL to NTSC and tried it on my 2 players. My very very picky oritron refused it immediatly (I was expecting as much) while my KLS greatly excepted it. I noticed little difference in quality (it was only 3 minutes long just to test it out) but it wasn't near as small as I hoped it would. I could get maybe 90 minutes on a 80 min cdrw with it. But I may have messed up somewhere (as part of the screen was on the wrong side) and that's why. I will try the pal table posted here and see if I yeild better results.
-
" with great quality."
Well I dont know about that, they already admit that basically they can get more movie at SAME VCD quality on a disk. And me personally would not call VCD "great quality"..now maybe you mean "great VCD quality", but it is still VCD quality none the less, which is nothing to write home to mommy about. -
Heres what I meant:
Maybe its just xVCD, but it shows you how to fit 120 mins without losing quality.
I don't know why I wrote great! Sorry!

Well I am impressed.
I have just tried out the CVCD template with TMPG and am very impressed with the time/size/quality of the encodings :O ! hehe, very good stuff.
I was expecting this to be some crappy xVCD rip off with lowered bitrate or something.
I dont own a DVD player, only a VCD player so I am unsure wether or not it will play with 128kbps.
I threw the same file through TMPG with CVCD template, it runs for 1 minute exact.
(128kbps sound) - 5.64mb
(224kbps sound) - 6.34mb (*try using this sound level if your DVD player doesnt play the original template, it is nice to see that this template doesnt only rely on lowered sound).
Give this template a shot, the output will suprise you. -
Just burnt the CVCD files (with Nero, un-compliant VCD) and stuck in VCD player and didnt even reconise that there was a CD in there which is a damn shame hehe.
Anyone got some suggests for what I should do to increase chances of gettin it to work? Multiplex-Demultiplex maybe?
Thanks.
