Can TMPGENC 2.5 plus encode an XVID HDTV.avi to mpg?

Title says it all

I tried...fine to mpg...but no sound. Authored using TMP Genc DVD author
but my standalone dvd player came up with an error message...

A 358 meg file came to 4 gigs...is this normal?

How much space is required on DVD disk to author?

Yes, tmpgenc supports xvid. Change the video bitrate or use the wizard to get the output size you want.

TMPGEnc has a reputation for poor audio encoding, but it works fine for me and I have never noticed any quality problems. I'm sure the members here can point you to better audio encoders.

But unless your XVID has very high quality audio to start with I doubt you will notice the difference.

Your audio problem may relate to AC3 audio. TMPGEnc doesn't like it. Same with MP3 VBR audio.

The usual system is to strip out the audio with a program like VirtualDub and save it as a WAV audio file. Then input that as your audio source to TMPGEnc. That can give you MPEG-1 Layer2 audio.

If you want the better and more compliant AC3 audio, you can use an external encoder or with TMPGEnc DVD Author there is a plug in AC3 encoder.

For menus, etc., I leave about 200MB free using TDA. The size of your file depends on the runtime of the video and bitrate used to encode. I don't do much with HDTV, but it would be similar. There are bitrate calculators in 'Tools' to the left that should give you an idea what the finished file size will be.

tmpgenc has now pretty good audio encoding in the later versions .. plus you can use external programs anyway
