I want to buy a DVD recorder but want the ability to get a macrovision hack. I am looking for a list of all DVD recorders which have macrovision firmware hacks available. I already know about the ILO DVDR04/HD04, but are there others?

  2. And the R04 and hdd model also do PAL to NTSC.
Sadly the R05 seems to be a Cyberhome.

  3. Lite-On DVD recorders can be hacked, too.

  4. The LiteOn and Ilo are the same. Some say that one is better than the other. The ILO is cheaper and is a Wal Mart item. There are some on eBay. I have an ILO that with the latest firmware 1195 and the hack just can't be beat for your purpose and as an all around good recorder. If you want an ILO you better get to your nearest Wal Mart Now. The 04 is discontinued.

Lordsmurf (or anyone else who wants to reply),

I saw your fatal flaws list for DVD recorders (http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=263168) and it seems like the Liteon (and clones) have higher-than-normal amount of problems. You suggest either JVC or Pioneer brands and I really respect your opinion on these matters. I want to use my DVD recorder for both recording satellite broadcasts and for transfering VHS tapes (some are macrovision protected and others are not). I guess I would like to know if, in your opinion, the problems with the Liteon recorders (with hack) are bad enough that I should stay away from them? I really want a reliable recorder and don't want to have to worry about jitter, or it breaking down after a few uses.

You should get a recorder that you feel is right for you. My, or others are personal opinions. As I said I have the ILO and am very pleased with it. It works very well. It has some operational quirks,[they all do], that I wish it didn't. If it hangs up, [not very often], I can trace it to somthing I did and not a machine problem. The Pioneer and the ILO were highly recomended. The Pooneer first but if wanted to defeat copy prtection, The ILO was the one to get If you are or will be copying, copy protected material, VHS or DVD, and don't go the PC route [which is not very easy]. the best and to my knowledge the only route is the Liteon/ILO. I have gone the PC route and the ILO is by far the most easy and fool proof.
PS; If you copy, copy protected DVD you will need another DVD player to play into the IlO. I do not know of any machine that will copy, copy protected DVD material to the HDD.
