  1. I have an internal DVD writer (Verbatim). LSS... I want to make it external.

Has anyone tried the IDE to USB cables?

Is this what you mean? http://www.dansdata.com/rdriver.htm.

It's an interesting idea. I can think of times when I might want to test or use a bare drive without opening up the computer case to connect it.

Apparently they have a similar circuit board in the IDE connector end that a USB external box has. Now that I've looked on the web, I see several different models.

  5. From the Videohelp Glossary:

    Firewire-400 Mbs
    USB-480 Mbps

That sounds missleading. USB is faster.

It does sound misleading, but USB has a higher signalling and CPU overhead than Firewire. So firewire is just as fast and uses less of the CPU allowing for more reliable continuous transfers.

  8. I bought one from CompUSA.

It has Firewire and USB. Installed with no software, works without a hitch.
