(SOLVED)How Do I tell if I need SD Ram or DDR Ram

I am buying a harddrive and RAM for a mate

what software can i use to find out what type of ram to get. SD Ram or DDR Ram


can this software tell me if it will support a 160gig harddrive as well

he is running windows 2000


i can open it and look , but i dont know what Im looking for


Will that SiSoftware Sandra do it for me

The easiest way to tell physically is that DDR has one notch in it and SDR has two notches. Sandra should also be able to tell you. Without opening it up though, you can download CPU-Z

I downloaded CPU-Z and its a nice bit of software

the one notch two notch description helps, i'll open it up and have a look

using CPU-Z at work it says that i have DDR-SDRAM, which is confusing, but I'll just open it and check how many notches.

DDR-SDRAM or Double Data Rate Synchronous DRAM is what people refer to as DDR. It's all technically SDRAM, but when people say SDRAM, they usually mean Single Data Rate or NON-DDR SDRAM.

We probably shouldn't ever discount reading the motherboard manual either. It will tell you in there whether the MB supports SD and/or DDR (it could well support both).

That CPU Z is a nice tool. I learned I had a stick of PC2100 and PC 2700 installed after I bought a "matched set" off a guy here...

when all else fails read the manual

i think its probably still in the plastic it came in

taking a look inside and using CPU-Z , i think i should be right finding out what ram to get.
