Slow Rips with Pioneer DVR-A09XL

Rips at 7x when the DVD is not CSS encrypted. I can deal with that. But it rips at 2x when it senses CSS. This is an internal unit and I have Patchburn installed, that doesn't help. Anyway I can get around this pathetic rip speed? Will upgrading the firmware to 1.4 with a PeeCee do the trick? I have no friends who run Windows anyway, so I guess I'm SOL.

The firmware is currently at 1.17.

The A09Xl should alrady have the fastest ripping speed for the 109 series. At

There's been a discussion (by PC users) of methods for changing the firmware so 109s become A09 (for faster rips and "quiet drive technology").

Without a PC to flash with, I don't think you can do much to change the ripping speed. A Mac flash is in the works, but will require some patience.

How are you measuring the Rip speed?

I use MTR to rip, and note the time it takes and the # of gigs ripped. Then I divide the gigs by the number of seconds and get around 4 megs/sec which is really quite slow.

I've heard of people ripping at 16x with an A09 and that would be a friggin dream. I guess that's 22 MB/sec or something. It would rip in 3 minutes what currently takes 15.

So my question is, will upgrading the firmware to 1.4 improve my ripping speed at all? If so, do you have any idea when that firmware upgrade will be available for OS X ?

The 1.4 firmware will add faster burning for selected/new media. I don't think it will speed up ripping. There's more info on the Pioneer sight as to the details. If you were to use a PC to make the update, be sure to get the A09 firmware.

On the rpc sight I mentioned earlier, there is a lot of impatience with the flasher development; but we have to keep in mind that they need to be tested on actualy hardware so that we dont fry our drives. A region free patch is also being developed, but the Flasher would be required for that to be used as well.

I just did a test rip of an ArCOSS disk (movie only mode) in MTR, and got (after some math) 4MB/sec rip speed on my 109. While it would be great to rip at a faster speed, I'm happy I can burn at 16X. I can remember when it took an hour to burn a DVD.
