Comp will burn DVDs but not cds?

My sony DRU500A stopped burning cds kept giving me a Power calibration error, i read it was caused by bad media, so i got some expensive media same thing. so i thought for sure there was something wrong with my drive so I went out and bought a dvd-rom/cdr combo drive, uninstalled every one of my burning programs (nero,musicmatch, alchohol,winamp) and updated itunes. i burned one cd on the new drive with itunes. then i installed another burning program cause i cant stand burning cds with itunes (burnon cd and dvd) and now i just get "unknown error". I dont get why dvds will burn perfect but cds wont burn at all.

thats the thing same thing with the brand new drive. it has to be a software confliction somewhere
