Does anyone know of a subscription-less stand alone DVR available to the consumer. I don't need a DVD recorder, I just want to manually record shows onto a hard drive and erase them later. I dont need archival or time shifting functins. Tivo and Replay's monthly fees are prohobitive for me.
I know this isnt really a DVD recorder question, but I figured that if anyone knows anything about this then it would be you guys.
Thanks.

It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.
In Europe there are satellite receivers with builtin hard drives available which exactly allow what you are looking for. I am not familiar with the situation in the USA.

HI StrikeFire83,
You can put in a tv card into your PC and upgrade your video card with TV out. Here is the site about tv cards.

Edit = typo.
You could always check out the ones used for video security. The only problem is some have no audio inputs and others only have a single channel(mono). Hard drives range from 40 gig to 250 gig. The second drawback is the are usually more expensive than a consumer DVD recorder with hard drive.
Why not just get a recorder with a hard drive? Probably won't cost much more (if any) than the other options.
There is a tivo unit with dvd player with Basic tivo service, but it costs more than a DVD Recorder with hard drive.
So your best bet for a stand alone unit is a dvd recorder with hard drive as mentioned by other users.
