I bought the full version of Win XP Pro and installed it about a year and a half ago on one of my computers. The disk has since been accidently broken. I still have my registration number and was wondering if anyone knew where I could possibly purchase a replacement disk (at a significant savings from what I paid for the first one). I had hoped to load it on a new computer in the not too distant future and retire the one I am currently using and format the drive and install Win 2000 for a friend.

    Thanks in advance.

as cheap as cd-r's are these days its super cheap & easy to make a copy of your original disc.. and i'm not sure why anyone would even use their original disc anymore.. slipstreaming service packs is easy to do, and it saves a lot of time & hassle opposed to installing windows then the service pack.. cleaner too.

i've got my windows xp professinal original safely tucked away, along with a cd-r copy.. and i've got 4 windows xp pro cd-r's with various service packs (sp1, sp1a, sp1a/ru1, sp2) in a binder with other copies of my software..

if you've got a friend who has a windows xp pro cd, you might see if you can make a copy of it.. because of activation, i dont see it as being too bad, as long as you keep your broken original with it.

Activation codes may not work with different install CDs. When I lost my XP Pro CD I had to show proof of ownership (the sticker with the CD key on it) which they then matched up with my online registration for XP that I had done when I first installed it. I had to send them $40 as it was an OEM copy I bought from NewEgg (I believe the retail box gets you a replacement disc free) and they sent me my new CD.

could it have been because yours was an oem version?

this situation happened to a friend of mine, we both purchased retail boxed copies (office depot) and he lost the actual disc (for a couple of months), but still had the box, cd book, and paper work.. his activation code worked just fine with a slipstream xp pro w/sp1a copy i gave him.
