  1. I orderd a 100 pack of Taiyo Yuden Printables from SVP Communications (www.blankdiscshop.co.uk). Recived them today and run a verification in DVDINFOPro and it tells me that these discs are 4x .

I tried to burn one disc and expect it to burn at 4x, but no no it only burns at 2x!!! I have a LG 4040b for the moment, but it should burn them at 4x anyway.....

I paid a half fortune for these discs, almost 1€ each and realy except to get what I paid for, but it's seems like they tried to trick me?

Here is a scan from DVDINFOPro:

  2. TYG02 is the media code for 8x DVD-R from Taiyo Yuden so it looks like you got what you paid for.

So it looks like a problem with your burner IMHO. Did you update the firmware to the latest one?

I ordered the same from them and haven't had any problems. They burn at 16x with my Plextor 716, but to keep the quality of the burn I usually burn them at 8x since I 'm not in a hurry.

I must say that these are the best discs I have ever tried.

You have a 4040B, so I'd be surprised if it even recognized a disc had an 8x write descripter since it's a 4x-only burner.

SVP are one the best retailers on the net, they wouldn't try to trick you. As others have pointed out it's your burner, not the discs/SVP.

It would only recognize it as higher if your burner supported it higher. Since your burner only supports speed as high as 4x,that is the highest write option you will see from any media, even 16x media,in your burner.

  11. a few months ago, i ordered 8x taiyo's from rima.com. no matter what i did, my plextor 708a would not burn at 8x. dvdinfo gave me the same readings as this post writer has shown. rima was very good about it, even credited 10 bucks back to my cc. i'm sure it was not their fault, as they do not manufacture the discs. they still kinda insisted they were 8x. i ordered same dvd/r's from same store and had same problem. not so much a problem, but i smell something fishy. not with rima or other retailers, but with taiyo possibly. i was kind of expecting to get the 4x the second time around, not making that big of a deal of it because they are great discs and rima is reputable. i've tried different firmwares to no avail. even nero say's it can't burn em at 8x. this is even after a clean install of xp and nero along with other burning apps that refuse anything other than 4x. odd.

    PX-708A can burn DVD+R at 8x but DVD-R is limited to 4x.

It's good to hear that you can burn them at 4x. My old Pioneer 106d which is a 4x burner, only detects TYG02 as 4x burn maximum. However, my new 16x burner detects these up to 8x and can burn at 16x.

I think you got what you paid for.

DVDINFOPRO says 8x under Manufacturer Rated Speed. but only 4x under Available Write Descriptor because YOUR BURNER does not support a faster speed. When Rima insisted the media is 8x they were correct. another case of user error...
