  1. Hello,

My procedure for encoding .vob files to mp4 .mov files seems to have stopped working on 0.0.9s. I think the last version I used was 0.0.9p, the interface was a little different.

I used to drop the .VOB file on the source field in the video tab, and then in that same tab, chose a preset with I believe said "MP4 .mov (ffmpeg)". Then I would select 16:9, and the video size would switch from 720x480 to 720x400. I would make sure "encode audio" was checked, and then press "Encode." The resulting files worked like a champ in QT and VLC.

Now the presets menu looks different and is in the summary tab. I'm choosing ".MOV mpeg-4" in the target well. I notice that the pre-computed video size is very different, 640x352. I change it to 720h and let the 16:9 menu change the 352 to 400. Then I press encode, and as I said, the resulting files are not playable in QT or VLC. VLC complains "ps: cannot peek main: no suitable demux module for `/:///Data/Backups/Video/hidalgo.mov' ". It seems clear that I don't have the same kind of file as I had with the old preset. The question is, how do I get what that old preset was doing, now?

  2. The "MOV mpeg-4" preset in 0.0.9s has been reported by other users as working normally. I made a test just now, and the resulting .mov was playable in Quicktime Player and VLC. So in order to help you further, could you please send me to major4@mac.com links to download clips or samples of your source and target files, so as I can make a test with them and try to reproduce your issue.

  3. I am thinking that this might be a problem with ffmpeg itself and not ffmpegX.

I create a .mov container with mpeg4 video and aac audio (ffmpeg defaults) and the result is a .mov file which crashes quicktime (on a PC atleast)

works perfectly on my mac, either in quicktime or in vlc

  5. Major,

I think I may have fixed this problem (knock on wood). Either way, I've found what may be an installation bug.

I noticed that *every* time I launched ffmpegX, it told me I needed to install the mpeg2enc binary, even though I had already done so several times, and hadn't updated the ffmpegX version.

I did some poking around, and discoverd that in the Application Support/ffmpegX folder, the mpeg2enc binary was a zero byte file. I also noticed that it and the other 3rd party binaries were owned by root, whereas everything else was owned by me. I manually copied in the mpeg2enc binary via the cli & "sudo", and lef the permissoins alone.

I can't think of why the permissions would be a problem b/c your installer asks for the admin password. But somehow it wasn't getting installed.

Anyway, I also can't explain why this would result in a large file that doesn't work - if the binary was empty, I'd expect the encoding to simply fail immediately, or at least for the output file to be empty.

Nevertheless, I did a couple of small .VOB's that worked, so I'm cautiously optimistic that the full size movie that I am currently recoding will work too.

On a separate note though, why do the presets now default to a smaller output resolution, 640x352 I think it is? Can this be set somewhere? I liked it before when it defaulted to 720x400.

  6. Sadly, it is still not working. I'd be happy to upload a file, but it is >2GB. So far I haven't had a smaller file fail, I tried to make one for you, but it worked fine.

I am starting to think that for some reason, the wrapper is never getting made. Here is the entire error message I get from VLC.

mp4: MP4 plugin discarded (no moov box)
    access_file: seeking too far
    access_file: seeking too far
    access_file: seeking too far
    ffmpeg: av_open_input_stream failed
    ps: cannot peek
main: no suitable demux module for `/:///Data/Backups/video/hidalgo.mov'

    mplayer gives this message:
    Playing hidalgo.mov.
MOV: missing header (moov/cmov) chunk! Maybe broken file...
MOV: missing header (moov/cmov) chunk! Maybe broken file...
    TiVo file format detected.
MPEG: No audio stream found -> no sound.
MPEG: FATAL: EOF while searching for sequence header.
    Video: Cannot read properties.
    No stream found.

If nobody can give me any ideas based on this, then is there a way I can chop off just the beginning of one of these files to make available to you?

A previous thread explains how to chop off just the beginning.
